A Synoptic Statistical Paper on Proposed National Budget for the Fiscal Year 2011-2012

Finance Minister AMA Muhith announced the proposed national budget of Tk 163,589 crore for fiscal year 2011-12 on June 09, 2011 in the paliament. The new budget focuses on three major areas- Poverty alleviation, employment generation and development of power and energy sector. Key statistics of the National Budget of Bangladesh for the fiscal year 2011-12 are mentioned below.
• Tk 163,589 crore national budget for 2011-12
• Earning Tk 118,385 crore;
• Non-development expenditure Tk 117,589 crore;
• ADP Tk 46,000 crore;
• Deficit Tk 45,204 crore;
• GDP growth target 7 percent:
The budget for the next fiscal was formulated against the backdrop of reducing foreign aid flow, decreasing export earnings and shrinking manpower export markets. These factors especially resource constraints influenced the preparation of the budget. In fact, the drop in foreign aid flow and export earnings as well as extra spending for various purposes will mean need of additional funds for development and other expenses. And this will in turn enhance the urgency of mobilizing more domestic resources. The new budget gives special attention to some key issues such as mobilizing internal and external resources, promoting agriculture, infrastructure development , education and IT, generating employment, checking inflation, tackling power and energy crisis and alleviating poverty. The national budget is the largest ever, highly ambitious and equally deficit. The budget has put forward a number of welcome proposals for promoting agriculture, reduce inflation, alleviate poverty ease power and energy crises and continue social safety net.
