Information System Practices
In today’s economy, it is extremely important for companies to use the most current information systems to stay competitive with larger companies. With technology becoming more common and affordable, small businesses have an opportunity to access resources that were at one time, only available to larger companies.
Enviro Safe is a small family owned and operated company interested in upgrading their information systems to improve efficiency, quality of work, customer satisfaction, and in turn increase profit and continue growth of the company. This company is located in Pittsgrove, NJ. They offer services in plumbing, heating, air-conditioning, and water conditioning. Enviro Safe has 4 full-time employees including the owner, two service workers, and a secretary. Even though the company is small, its revenue exceeds 1 to 2.5 million dollars a year. The company has a lot of growth potential and a strong customer base so with a few improvements, they may be able to achieve a higher level of business organization.
In any business, there is always room for improvement. Enviro Safe’s main concern is mobility. According to a report released by IDC, worldwide shipments of mobile devices will see a compound annual growth rate of 54% in the next four years, and by 2011 there will be 82 million such devices in use (Pappalardo). Currently, customer data is only accessible through the main offices three computers and a paper based filing system. This process creates limited access to customers files while the servicemen are on the job site thus creating unnecessary foot work for them to figure out how old or new some of the products are, did their company or someone else install them, and are the warrantees still valid on a product that needs to be replaced.
