Abstract

The following research paper provides evidence on why breaking pitches should be banned by all youth baseball organizations.   It then goes on to discuss the growing number of injuries suffered by adolescent baseball pitchers when throwing these pitches.   The paper concludes by setting out practical suggestions that can be used to protect adolescent arms so that they may continue to enjoy baseball throughout their adulthood.

How Young Is Too Young?
      Baseball is played in every state of the United States and many countries throughout the world.   The Little League Organization is the largest of youth baseball organizations and has over 200,000 teams in all 50 states and more than 80 countries.   Thus, in the United States alone, there are over 200,000 head coaches and 400,000 assistant coaches.   These coaches are not required to be certified in any way.   It is not even a requirement for them to have ever played baseball themselves.
