“A lesson before dying” by Ernest j Gaines is a great book and I think everyone should read it. The story takes places in Louisiana in the late 1940’s.Grant Wiggins the narrator in the story tries to help a young boy named Jefferson wrongfully accused and convicted of the robbery and murder of a white man. Jefferson was sentenced to a death by electrocution. At Jefferson trial his court appointed attorney argues that Jefferson isn’t educated enough to plan a robbery and wasn’t involved in the killing. Jefferson’s attorney stated “sentencing him to death would be like putting a hog in the electric chair”. Despite the attorney defense the all white jury stilled found Jefferson guilty.
Determined that her godson Jefferson will die like a man Miss Emma turns to grant. Grant is the local school on the plantation Miss Emma is convinced that grant can teach Jefferson how to be a man. Although grant feels there’s nothing he can do he agrees to visit Jefferson in jail. At first grant was not very concerned about Jefferson he just wanted to pass the time he had to spend with him. Before long he begins to think of what it would feel like to be in Jefferson.
After spending a little more time with grant Jefferson began to open up. Oneday while grant was visiting Jefferson grant begins to tell Jefferson how he would like them to be friends. Grant wants s Jefferson to write his thoughts in a notebook grant also bring s Jefferson a radio to listen too. At this point Jefferson feels as though grant really cares about him and for the first time feels that he’s more than a hog.
During his visit to the jail with Miss Emma and reverend Ambrose grant talks with Jefferson and communicates to him thatches a great deal of important to the community and they will remember him long after the execution and he will have an powerful impact on thousands of people.
