|The aim of this paper is to compare and analyze the relation between Miss Emily Grierson, from the short story A Rose for     |
|Emily, written by William Faulkner, and the history of Mnemosyne, the Greek goddess of memory.                                 |
|The short story is based on a social memory. Miss Emily was a respected and untouchable person in that town. As the story     |
|mentions, she was a “fallen monument”. She maintained in a pedestal, where no one could reach her. She herself and all the     |
|people in that town preserved the idea that she was a rich person that came from a wealthy and respected family. Nothing could|
|ever strike this position and worse, she could do anything wrong that the ones of her generation would never judge her. The   |
|memory of her and the morality around all this were frozen as her life, as she has not left home for ten years. Emily had a   |
|gift just like Mnemosyne: her memory distinguished her from the other people.                                                 |
|Mnemosyne, Greek goddess of memory, was considered one of the most powerful goddesses of her time. After all, it is memory,   |
|some believe, that is a gift that distinguishes us from the other creatures in the animal world. It is the gift that allows us|
|to reason, to predict and anticipate outcomes, and is the very foundation for civilization. She was a Titaness, a daughter of |
