There are two meanings to the proverb “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.” One is literal and the other is metaphorical. The literal meaning is that thirsty horses often hesitate to go into rivers and creeks because of their fear of water. The horse owners would take their horse to riverbeds but the horse would be reluctant to go into the water to drink. The metaphorical meaning is that someone can get great advice or opportunity but you cannot make them take advantage of or utilize the great advice or opportunity they are being given. You can help someone as much as you like, but if they do not try or do not help themselves, then they will not succeed. The water symbolizes a tool that can be used or ignored. The tool can be anything- opportunity, advice, knowledge, etc. There is a good or bad choice left to that someone and the choice is if they choose to take advantage of the tools they are presented with.…

The only way to avoid such confusion, they have concluded, is to do away with the pet name altogether, as many of their Bengali friends have done. (3.56)…

The book of Proverbs describes what a wise man is and what his behavior grants him. A man of wisdom has many characteristic aspects that make him ‘wise’, these are made very clear in the book of Proverbs. King Solomon, being granted the wisest man, was the author to most of the proverbs that offer the descriptions of both a wise and unwise man. Some of the aspects to a wise man are hard to honor, but that is what makes a man wise, and gives him the benefits and good fortune in his life.…

    Aphorism in Life

    • 675 Words
    • 2 Pages

This aphorism came from my own experience and what I want to experience soon. My parents always told me “Anak! Konti na lang makakatapos ka rin, magtiis ka muna”. Everytime I heard that, I always pray and talk to myself that “I know God loves me”. I have a lot of sacrifices made just to be here, to study and to reach for my dreams. My parents can’t afford to send me to school that’s why I stopped one year after I graduated high school. I worked for nine months and after that by God’s grace an acquaintance of my father told me that he wants to support my study. I was really glad because of that opportunity, but of course I need to do my part to them. I worked for their pharmacy every summer and when the school year started I will work for them as the housekeeper, cleaning and washing the clothes and dishes. I have a lot of sacrifices done just to reach my dream and to help my family. There are times that my allowance is not enough but I didn’t complaint for it. I will just say to myself that all of the bad things happening to my life have a reason.…

    Words of wisdom

Don’t believe that you can’t achieve. I once thought about giving up when I had a bad baseball tryout and I didn’t think I would make the team. I tried my best and gave it my all. I ended making the team that day. If I had not believed in myself or given up I would not have made it. I feel strongly about these words of wisdoms because you never know what could happen if you don’t give up. Never give up in life because if you try your hardest you can achieve anything that you put your mind to.…

"People use idioms to make their language richer and more colorful and to convey subtle shades of meaning or intention. Idioms are used often to replace a literal word or expression, and many times the idiom better describes the full nuance of meaning. Idioms and idiomatic expressions can be more precise than the literal words, often using fewer words but saying more. For example, the expression it runs in the family is shorter and more succinct than saying that a physical or personality trait 'is fairly common throughout one's extended family and over a number of generations.'"…
