3 Three Things I Believe
"Man is what he believes." is one rule we should all live by, Anton Chekhov, a short story author lived by this and preached it to everyone he met. Each person in this world believes in something or someone, for every high school student, there is a younger middle or elementary school student, who looks up to and believes in that high school student. They will model their life after the high school students ', trying as hard as they can to be what they believe. I too model my life on three basic things that I believe; God helps us every day, we can do anything and the power of technology.

The first thing I believe helps all of us in our everyday lives is God and the power of prayer. I strongly believe that God works in each and every one of us and in all different kinds of different ways. A few weeks ago, before our first football game the whole football team got together and met at the 50 yard line of the football field right after the sun had gone down. Most of the underclassmen weren 't sure what to expect or what we were going to do here but, as soon as team captain Trevor Cling explained that "this year every Thursday night we were going to meet at the field to have a prayer before the game on Friday" everyone seemed calm. In the following minutes, each teammate held hands with one another and added their addition to the prayer; by the end of the prayer everyone seemed a little different because they had just poured out their feelings and expectations of the game to everyone including God. Furthermore I remember feeling God telling me what to say and the next thing I knew we had won our first game, which no one picked us to win. We did the same thing the following week and won our second game in a row! I know God was at both of those games; I also know he expects us to never give up and relayed a message to each member of our team, making sure they knew if they did their part, God would pick up the rest! I strongly believe God wants us to always work

Devastating situations were occurring back to back in my life. Things had gotten so bad that I began questioning my faith in God. I was seriously at a crossroad. This slightly put a strain on our relationship, which led me to not be as close to God as I was previously. I had stopped going to church, I barely prayed at night, and when unfortunate circumstances kept appearing; that diminished my faith even more. I saw my life spiraling out of control and I honestly did not know what to do about it. Therefore, I did the only thing that I grew up doing… I prayed.…

    My Personal Faith

My faith has enabled me to handle life challenges from my past and present. Some of these challenges have been series of events that I could hardly believe were happening, while others came with great joy. At five years old, my younger brother, Chandler, died unexpectedly. This was a tough challenge for my whole family to face. This challenge could have easily torn my family apart but together, as a team with God, we worked hard at picking up the pieces and moving forward even when there were days that seemed to be impossible. In the fifth grade, I was diagnosed with a common learning disability known as Attention Deficit Disorder. I am faced with this challenge on a daily basis. I have learned to cope with this disorder over the years by making prayer and patience priorities in helping me conquer this challenge. This challenge was especially difficult during my SAT and ACT tests. Certain scores on these tests were required to get into college and play NCAA football. The stress and pressure of taking these tests felt unbearable at times. While studying and before and during each test, I would remind myself that, through God, all things are possible. With God by my side, I was able to achieve the scores needed to reach my college and athletic goals.…

A thorough assessment may determine the need for the healing power of prayer. McMinn (2011) emphasizes the importance of prayer in and out of a counseling session and the benefits of assisting a client to improve their relationship with God. “The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective” (James 5:16). Prayer can be effective for the client to strengthen their relationship with God. Prayer can lead to a sense of self-identity and prepare a broken client to create a closer, healing relationship with God (McMinn, 2011).…

It is very easy to believe that our own way of doing thing is correct and anyone different is wrong or inferior. This is due to a lack of understanding of the unknown. When we start to understand more about the unknown it becomes the known and so is more acceptable to us. So by understanding and respecting the beliefs of others we can learn very much.…

Several times when I have struggled through the obstacles in my life, I prayed and God helped me through them. I was stuck in a situation a year back and God helped mw choose the right one. I got my financial aid money and after getting what I needed. I had money left over. It was to either spend it on stuff I really did not need or help my grandmother out with her finances. God helped me make the right decision and help my grandmother. As a younger woman I was always in the streets, and always going out. One particular night something kept telling me not to go and hang out with my friends. Well my friend called to ask if I was ready she would be on her way. I told her I was not going; I just decided to stay home. At about 130am my phone rang, she called to tell me one of our friends was shot and killed. I had the instinct of something bad happening, so I did not…

McMinn (1996) allows us to see that we need a healthy sense of self in order to overcome our obstacles (p. 47). One way we develop a healthy sense of self is to pray. Praying allows us to be in touch with God. McMinn (1996) states that “those who pray often tend to experience more purpose in life, greater marital satisfaction, religious satisfaction, and a general sense of well-being” (p. 66). However, the counselor must first establish a trusting relationship with the client before they can effectively use prayer within the counseling sessions. If a trusting relationship is not established, the counselor runs the…

To me, God has always helped in life through problems that I have faced. However, soldiers that are fighting for our country have kept God close to their fearless hearts. As General George Marshall said “Military power wins battles, but spiritual power wins wars.” I know in my heart that everyday and night God looks down from the heavens and blesses our soldiers who fight with courage. While freedom surges through their hearts. God has given service men and women as well as citizens, the strength to never lose sight of our ever beloved country and to keep fighting each day.…

In the darkest of places, with God, hope shines through. Confirming this statement, “I lay aside my pride before God, who has taken me from nothing to make me who I am” (385). He became nothing, but he had hope and he laid everything down for God. Doing this took him from nothing, and made him who he is today. As well as, “God offered you a miracle, when … God sent you a fortune in the midst of your deprivation.” In the midst of his deprivation, despair, and distressfulness God sent some hope his way, sent him a miracle. When you are in a dark place God will be by your side giving you hope if you are willing to take it.…

Leaning on God during this tough time helped my family and I get through it. Even though my grandpa is no longer with us, I now feel like I have an extra body looking over me. Harlem Reflection

One specific insight that contributed to my prayer for the world was a comment in a TED talk that we watched about cultural appropriation. A student described the unique sights, sounds, and smells of Harlem. This student’s perspective was contradictory to another’s, who only knew of the neighborhood what he heard by word of mouth. This flawed view consisted of solely danger and poverty. When the student with the flawed view heard a real description of Harlem, he was awed into remarking, “Show me THAT Harlem”. This remark partly encapsulates how I’ve prayed for the world. One of the biggest battles we can fight mentally is combating ignorance. I learned to see the good in any environment, as well as recognize present harmony, as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures page 470, “…Science knows no lapse from nor return to harmony”. Through reading and reflecting on the Christian Science Monitor, I grasped a deeper meaning of harmony and the way it’s expressed in our ever-changing…
