"The Masque of the Red Death"
1. Poe was a master "wordsmith." Through carefully chosen diction he is able to create a psychological effect on his reader. What effect did his description of "Red Death," in the very first paragraph of the story, have on you? Quote those details that provoke this response from you.

Through Poe’s diction there was a psychological effect made on the reader.

“The "Red Death" had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar(1) and its seal – the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution.”
From his description i thought of the outbreak of the bubonic plague that devastated western europe.

2. Why does Poe rely heavily on imagery to provide a detailed description of Prospero's hall?

I believe poe tried to portray the Dukes behavior for us to get a glimpse of why people thought he was mad.

3. "He had come like a thief in the night." Where in literature is this allusion taken from? What is the significance of the allusion? You may need to put the expression into a search engine in order to find the source of the allusion.

This phrase is from the Bible in 1 Thessalonian. The significance of it is that you should keep your guard up because you never know when a “thief” will sneak up on you. 4. The most featured word throughout the story is blood, yet Poe has carefully chosen it to represent horror. Find two passages in the story, where the word blood is used to describe the color. Substitute a word of your choosing and write the passage. Is the passage as effective with your substitution? Why or why not?

1.“But in this chamber only, the color of the windows failed to correspond with the decorations. The panes here were scarlet – a deep blood color.”

2. “But in the western or black chamber the effect of the fire-light that streamed upon the dark hangings through the blood-tinted panes, was ghastly in the extreme, and produced so wild a look upon the countenances of those who entered, that there were few of the company bold enough to set foot within its precincts at all.”

1.But in this room only, the color of the windows failed to correspond with the decorations. The panes here were scarlet – a deep blood color.”

2.But in the western or black chamber the effect of the fire-light that streamed upon the dark hangings through the blood-tinted panes, was awful in the extreme, and produced so wild a look upon the countenances of those who entered, that there were few of the company bold enough to set foot within its precincts at all.

For the first passage mine sounded less dark due to the word “chamber” being more grim. The second passage was also not as effective due to awful not fitting into the scene of the passage as ghastly.

5. Read the passage highlighted in green. List and define those words in the passage that you think produce an emotional effect on the reader. Explain your choices.

Excited – very enthusiastic and eager.

Bizarre – very strange or unusual, esp. so as to cause interest or amusement.

Delirious – in an acutely disturbed state of mind resulting from illness or intoxication and characterized by restlessness, illusions, and incoherence of thought and speech.

Disgust – a feeling of revulsion or profound disapproval aroused by something unpleasant or offensive.

Madman – a man who is mentally ill

Wanton – (of a cruel or violent action) deliberate and unprovoked.

The words chosen are descriptive to the situation and create an image/emotion for the reader.

"Annabel Lee"
1. Sadness and grief are two emotions that are almost alike. They vary in intensity. Which word better describes this poem, sadness or grief? Why?

I believe that it is grief that this poem conveys. This is due to the writer feeling prolonged periods sadness, loneliness, and mourning. We can see this from “For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;”.

2. List the words that you think give the poem a haunting effect. chilling bore shut envying killing sepulcher

He starts of describing the seven apartments and how bizarre they look “There were seven…while the folding doors…” (234). the fact that there were seven rooms is symbolic in itself due to that there are seven stages in life. Poe uses the number of rooms to describe the stages of life in a way that the first room symbolizes birth and the seventh room symbolizes death. In every room there are decorated stained glass windows along with the carpet that coordinate with the color of the room. The first room, blue symbolizing birth, purple is the developmental stage of life, green for the nourishment. The orange room represents the setting of the sun, the ending of life, leading to the white room for the ascension into heaven. The seventh and final room being black velvet represents death. It is in the seventh room that draws a feeling of fear among the prince’s guests and is avoided. The room is entirely decorated in black except for the window panes which were that of a scarlet. “There stood…a brazier of fire… (235). There is a fire that prominently illuminates the room where an ebony clock stands striking at every hour.…

    The Conclusion of Guilt

The many different works of Edgar Allan Poe all aim to do one thing. Strike fear into the heart of the reader. Simple, yet effective, he expresses fear through these many different themes and motifs. In many of Poe's works he describes the evil drive in men to kill and commit sin. He likes to focus on the downward spiral of the human race instead of romanticising them. The guilt of the narrator is a major theme in ‘‘The Tell-Tale Heart.’’ The major symbol is the beating heart. Poe chooses a heartbeat because it is human and maddengly persistant. The thematic subject may be guilt, but the theme is that the human heart cannot endure the burden of guilt, especially in the case of murder. The guilty must confess somehow or be consumed by his or her conscience. Our narrator has this strange capacity throughout the text to hear a heartbeat. This seems to haunt him, but a greater label for the repeated disturbance would be guilt. Having killed someone close to him, he tells on himself but it is hard to identify what occurs as remorse, a feeling we would expect for such a crime so we have to turn to insanity.…

The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe is the story of Price Prospero’s attempt to quarantine himself and his courtiers from the deadly disease, the Red Death. One of the major themes in the short story is: No one can escape death, not even the rich and powerful. Today’s society is filled to the brim with terror and uncertainty of what tomorrow may bring knocking on their front door. Sickness or even death, perhaps? England is hidden in the cloak of sickness known as the Black Death and no matter how hard people try to escape from its folds, no one is safe from this plague. In a panic, healthy people have done all they can to avoid this sickness. The doctors refuse to see patients; the priests refuse to administer last rites. Shopkeepers have closed their stores, and many people have fled the cities for the countryside, but even there people are finding that the plague has spread (“Black Death”). The farmers and retailers of farm produce are also in danger of catching the Bubonic plague due to the fact that there are fleas on their animals (“Spread of the Elizabethan Bubonic Plague in Elizabethan England”). The plague causes many problems for the victim, such as very high fever, delirium, vomiting, muscular pains, and the swelling of lymph nodes.…

The “red death” is a symbol of unavoidable death. It can even be compared to the Black Death that killed millions of people during the middle ages, in Europe. Surrounding this “red death,” Poe used objects and color to symbolize the unfortunate outcome in the end. For example, he used the ebony clock to portray time ticking down and reminding the people that like the pendulum swinging in the clock, they can not stop what is to come, but can only wait in fear. Another use of symbolism would be the color use for the rooms; the seven colors symbolize the seven stages in life. First, the color black. This was the seventh room and had contained the ominous, ebony clock. It had been "closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries that hung all over the ceiling and down the walls, falling in heavy folds upon a carpet of the same material and hue" (146), and contained "no light of any kind.” This represented the dark and unavoidable death. The other six colored rooms represent the stages of life before death, the growth from a baby to…

Edgar Allan Poe lived a life filled with loss, grief, and suffering. It is no surprise, then, that many of his works share the theme of death. “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “William Wilson” and “The Cask of Amontillado” all explore the theme of death; however, in each of these works Poe shows a different aspect of it. In “William Wilson” death is presented in an ambiguous and mysterious way, as the audience does not know whether William Wilson’s look-a-like is a haunting figure of his imagination or is a classmate that seems to know too much. “The Fall of the House of Usher” is presented through the narrator’s lens as he helps out a friend whose whole life has been permeated with death. Lastly,…
