During this attack and for three years after the Japanese has seized the island, CPT Russell Volckmann was forced into situations that required his leadership style and techniques to be dynamic in nature. By all accounts Russell Volckmann was considered an average infantry officer within his unit. Yet during his three years behind Japanese lines Russell Volckmann’s use of situational leadership allowed him to evaded a well supplied and reinforced army, united tribal leaders in northern Philippines, organized an effective guerrilla force, and conducted guerrilla operations that enabled the United States forces to seize the Philippines and ultimately denying the Japanese access to the island.…

Ten hours following the attacks on Pearl Harbor the Japanese attacked the main island of the Philippines, Luzon. This island and the defense of it were under the command of Major General MacArthur, who assumed command while the Philippines were still under WPO (War Plan Orange). The key point behind WPO was that the most effective way of defending the island was by focusing all of its protective forces around Bataan. This plan wasn’t so much a means of defense as a delaying measure which would allow the U.S. ample time to send reinforcements. When MacArthur assumed control in July of 1941, he was able to convince the commanding Generals and Admirals that the defense of the island would be more successful if they assumed a more active defense of the Philippines.…

Their most famous defeat came at the Philippines. The Japanese began their attack on the Philippines on the same day as the Pearl Harbor attack. The soldiers stationed in the Philippines were badly outnumbered and were being overrun on the Bataan peninsula. President Roosevelt commanded General Douglas MacArthur to flee. As General MacArthur was leaving, he made his famous vow saying: “I shall return.” Although General MacArthur fled, the GIs were left to fend for themselves. Without their general, they couldn’t last long. The American and Filipino soldiers defending the Philippines were forced to surrender. The American and Filipino soldiers were forced to march eighty miles in just six days to a prison camp. Anyone who stepped out of line or showed signs of fatigue was shot. A total of ten-thousand men died along the…

Japanese had captured the Philippine Islands three years prior to this battle, and this was the chance American troops had to liberate the Philippines. Encirclement strategy and clear objectives are what allowed the United States to come out victorious in this battle. The Battle of Manila became known as one of the most brutal for urban warfare and was far more violent than any war following it in the Pacific region of World War II. Even though the fight was between the United States and the Japanese, the Filipinos played a major role in the outcome of the fight. On March 11, 1942, MacArthur first departed from the Philippines as a way to flee the Japanese; He did not return until October 20, 1944. For 953 days, the Filipinos had to continue their fight against the Japanese without the “unstoppable” Douglass MacArthur. Their story is the one that needs to be told. It just so happens, that their story is also incredible interesting. The Gorillas in Luzon were responsible for devastating the Japanese military…
