STAFF INDUCTION HANDOUT

Agreed Ways Of Working
Policies and procedures are put in place within care settings to ensure that staff, service users and employers are protected, benefitted and are working in the best way possible. Company policies are backed up by law and also national care standards.

Service user care plans are a great way of understanding ways of working. You must read them thoroughly before undertaking any care work with a company or individual.

Policies and procedures often change according to law, preference or if an incident occurs, this also applies for care plan so it is very important to keep everything relevant and up to date.

We ensure all policies and procedures are understood by asking staff to read and sign them upon employment.

Each persons role has a set of rules and guidance policies to ensure their job is being carried out correctly and efficiently, not posing any risk to themselves or service users. Each worker must ensure to only carry out their required tasks, as they may not be trained or qualified to undertake certain tasks.

Below is an example of why it is important to understand your own roles and responsibilities;

Jim does not have training to administer medication to Mr. Smith, but one day decides to help the senior staff who are busy on shift and give Mr. Smith his daily medication. Jim accidentally gives Mr. Smith another residents medication, luckily Mr. Smith was not harmed because of the small dosage, but Jim's mistake could have been fatal.

This is why policies and procedures are but in place, to protect people who require our care.

Policy and Procedure examples;

- Fire & Evacuation Policy
- Mobility Policy
- Uniform
- Pay & Salary terms
- Mobile Phone policy
- Personal care

    It is important for you to keep up to date with the agreed ways of working in your work place. These changes could come about because of changes to the care plan, the client’s wishes or even changes to the law. You need to know these changes so that you know your job role in full, allowing you to do the job role proper and safely. This will keep the client and his/her family happy and confident in you and your ability to do the work. It is also important because you could face disciplinary action from the company if you do not follow the rules laid out by them, or worse yet you could face legal action against for breaking the law.…

In practice, this means that we should have a range of policies covering everything from safeguarding children, equality of opportunity, admissions, behaviour, health and safety and medicines through to data protection and confidentiality. Care plans and daily records and contributing to them are part of my daily job. I should be observant and thoughtful to the needs of my clients so that what I say and write in their records is accurate and true. The main source of information is the client themselves, providing they are able to do so appropriately. They should be able to provide the most information about their past and present illnesses, life-style, and health care needs. They are in the best position to describe their feelings about health and illness and can identify specific problems or goals they might have. Another source of information is the client’s family. This source becomes vital in situations where the client is unable to participate, such as when the client does not have the mental capacity. The family are also important in clarifying or validating the client’s information they may have told me. Medical records, previous assessments etc. are all sources of gaining information about the client, communicating with other members of staff and the health care team can also be a good source of information. Nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, GP’s, and others can all add to the information about the client. Specific care plan activities for which I’m responsible, I will have to refer to the clients care plan. The clients care plan will have been assessed and will include details of how to meet the clients: physical, Emotional, Social, Cultural needs and I will follow the instructions to the best of my ability.…
