Date: 02/10/2014 IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT As Harper Lee once wrote in her famous novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, “As you grow older, you’ll see white man cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it-whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine her family he comes from, he is a trash. “ While watching the heat of the night, a movie that took place in the 1967, I have seen her phrase in the beginning of the movie when the police officer arrested Sidney Poitier as the detective Virgil s Tibbs for the murder of Mr. Colbert just because he was black. In the Heat of the Night is a 1967 dramatic mystery film directed by Norman Jewison based on the 1965 John ball novel of the same name which tells the story of a murder of a business man that detective Virgil Tibbs a black police detective, is asked to investigate in the racist town of Mississippi. This movie won five academy awards, which was for the best picture, the best actor, the best academy award for film editing etc. Although the film was based on a true story that happened in the 1968 when white people was the head of everything and black were considered as nothing. In the late of 1960s life in America was tough and not pleasant for the black people. Racisms everywhere, and everyone wanted there right. Thing were upside down in 1968 were everyone fought against racism, politics, racial etc. For me the heat of the night was a wonderful movie, and I enjoyed watching it. The best part for me was when they were having this conversation, how much they paid you to do their police job “A hundred and sixty-two dollars, and thirty-nine cents per week”. What “A hundred and sixty-two dollars and thirty-nine cents a week? Well boy! Sam, you take him outside but treat him nice, because a man that makes a hundred and sixty-two dollars and thirty-nine cents a week, we do not want to ruffle him! He couldn’t imagine how come this black man earns more money than him. Detective Tibbs was able to investigated the case and find out who truly kill Mr. Colbert. However you want to know what truly happen in the movie you welcome to watch it you have the rest I hope you enjoy it as I did.

The gripping novel “In The Heat Of The Night” written by John Ball in 1965 is a story about a black man named Virgil Tibbs suspected to be a murderer when a crime takes place in the City of Wells. In the mid 60’s black people were accused guilty by the white people because they do not have equal rights with the white people. The story is also about racism which is very well-known at that time until now. The novel has been made into a movie in 1967. The main character was played by Sidney Poitier, the first black man to receive an Oscars. There are several differences between the novel and the movie which made them effective and not. The description of characters is one of the main differences. Also, characters that is not in the novel but is in the movie is also one thing that differentiate them. The novel gives more meaning to the feelings of each characters towards each other which is good because the readers will understand more the characteristics of each character.…

Popular cinema often reflects on social and cultural class. One theme being ethnicity. Sidney Poitier’s performance in In the Heat of the Night (1967. Norman Jewison) exemplifies the social and cultural issues of the time in U.S. history. The main theme of the film is racism that is so fierce and perverse it highlights the time perfectly in US history and the Civil Rights Movement.…

Think about the last book you read. Has it stood the “test of time”? Incorporated countless profound themes and insights? It most probably hasn’t. Unless it was Harper Lee’s, To Kill A Mockingbird. The story follows the life of Jean Louise (Scout), her family, the town of Maycomb and the hindrance coloured people faced. Through a series of morals and lessons, we learn sometimes respect, can be vexatious for people to manifest, however it can make all the difference in how you are viewed by yourself and others. Here, Calpurnia is trying to instill into Scouts head how everyone should be treated with respect, especially when they’re your guest. I find this quote indispensable because it refutes the southern thinking that white people were so courteous, and black people were the opposite. Not that Scout is the…

The LA riots were the main theme for this week’s reading. Needless to say, it was a mortifying past for both the African Americans and the people of LA. The emotion explosion that accounted for thousands of injuries and billions of dollar worth of damage originated from the discriminatory decision of a court case. Rodney King, a middle-aged African American man, was pulled over on a highway for drunk speeding. He was brutally beaten by four police officers for no apparent reasons, and someone recorded the scene. The short clip soon hit the news, which shook the African American community and many questioned the legality of the police’s action.…

George Orwell 's 1984 is an exemplary work of dystopia. Although written in 1940s, 1984 is a vivid depiction of China during the Cultural Revolution and Soviet Union during the Elimination of Counterrevolutionaries. Dystopia came into being after the World War Ⅱ, when the world was at a loss about its future. Although the world was purged of fascism, personality cult and communist dictatorship arose to take its place.Dystopia is characterized by an authoritarian and totalitarian regime that oppresses individual freedom and development; scientific development and general education is cast aside; the whole society is embedded in constant warfare and violence, and scientific research is done only for military use and for controlling the masses ' mentality; the society is dominated by general poverty and egalitarianism. In 1984, the Party controls everything, and all party members are the tools utilized by the Party nourish its power and consolidate its sovereign. Knowledge of the outside world is blocked from the population in Oceania. Almost everything the party members do is under the surveillance of those omnipresent telescreens, and thus the party members have to learn to control every muscle on the face so as to avoid the suspicion of Thought Police, and they have to accept and advocate whatever policy the Party promulgates. In this sense, only the paroles have a little freedom to think and live the way they like, which is derived from their ignorance which embodies the Party 's slogan “Ignorance is strength".…

The short story can draw parallels to Bruce Springsteen’s song American Skin (41 shots). In both the story and the song, it is clear that it can be dangerous to live in these ghettos in New York. You should not trust a lot of people and especially not the police. Police brutality in the ghettos is a big subject and many cops are abusing their power. In the story, a young boy is shot and killed in his apartment for no reason at all. He was watching television when he heard noise outside and naturally looked out the window.…

“Some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negroes are not to be trusted around women – black or white. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men”. That was a quote by Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch is a man who always tries to do what is right. In the novel ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ a major theme is racism. An innocent black man is unfairly charged for raping a white girl. Throughout the book we learn about Atticus’ views on racism as well as racism being present in the novel. I feel very strongly about this topic and my views about it are very similar to Atticus’, rather than most of the Maycomb community’s.…

In most cases, African Americans were not even acknowledged, they were treated like animals with no regard for their feelings. In To Kill a Mockingbird if you were colored like Tom Robinson it didn't matter how innocent he was, his crippled arm and the evidence against him, the jury, because they are racist thought that Tom Robinson raped Mayella Ewell because he was a Negro. During this period of time, African American’s were still highly subjugated members of society. They were not permitted to commingle with whites in public settings, as exemplified in the courthouse physical separation of races and in the clearly distinct black and white areas of…

Two of the characters in the movie depict a white couple who are husband and wife. The woman represents a person who is self-centered and racist while the man is a semi-famous figure for Los Angeles who proves himself as not being as, if not at all, racist. The viewer then meets two African American men who seem scary and dangerous walking down the sidewalk past the couple mentioned earlier. Their conversation leads us to believe that they are good people, but prove the viewer wrong by pointing guns at the couple’s head’s and stealing their car. When the couple get home, they have the locks on their doors changed because they’re worried the two men will come after them once again. The locks are changed by a Hispanic man, one that the woman does not trust. She orders her husband to have the locks changed again in the morning. When her husband tells her to calm down since she has just had the long, stressful night, she backlashes and makes the point that if she had turned around when she had seen those two men walking towards her on the sidewalk, she would’ve been considered a racist. However, she didn’t do that and ended up having a gun shoved in her face. On a similar note, another couple is depicted in this movie, however they are both of African American descent. Police officers pulled over and treated them like criminals even…

Many individuals jump to conclusions about people who are different from them. In The Tortilla Curtain, Delany yells at two Mexican men falsely accusing them of arson, "Delaney looked round at his neighbors, their faces drained and white, fists clenched, ready to go anywhere, do anything, seething with it, spoiling for it, a mob. They were out here in the night, outside the walls, forced out of their shells, and there was nothing to restrain them." (Boyle 289). Delany angrily accuses two Mexican men, José Navidad and his friend, of arson who then get arrested because they were Mexican, which shows how some white cops racially profile other races of people. Additionally, some people are hypocrites and racial profilers. In The Tortilla Curtain, the duke is talking about how all blacks are thieves, "Because Mary Jane 'll be in mourning from this out; and first you know the nigger that does up the rooms will get an order to box these duds up and put 'em away; and do you reckon a nigger can run across money and not borrow some of it?" (Twain 97). The duke is saying that all blacks are robbers when that’s what he is, which is racial profiling as well as ignorance and hypocrisy. Others also suffer from ignorance and racial profiling, but this time, they don’t realise it. In The Secret Life of Bees, Lily is thinking about what T. Ray thought about colored women, it is in this moment that she realises she thought the same thing and that she is also slightly prejudice, “T. Ray did not think colored women were smart. Since I want to tell the whole truth, which means the worst parts, I thought they could be smart, but not as smart as me, me being white. Lying on the cot in the honey house, though, all I could think was August is so intelligent, so cultured, and I was surprised by this. That's what let me know I had some prejudice buried inside me.” (Kidd 103). This quote is an example of…
