12 Years A Slave

12 Years a Slave Imagine having everything that you ever wanted in life and then over a week’s span it was all taken away from you in one night. The movie, 12 Years a Slave, focuses in one the time in history when blacks were looked at as a less being then human. In the movie the main character is a African American male whose name is Solomon Northup who is a free black who lives in the upper part of New York. He has everything he needs in life but then he is abducted by these two men who tell him they are a part of a circus and would love to use his special talent of playing the violin. He decides to go with them and they trick him and sell him to a slave seller. Solomon goes on this long journey and learns of the tolls that other African American’s must go through because they are classified as slaves. The movie shows the worst parts of slavery and tells an interesting story about one slave who was able to escape slavery and go back to his life and family as a free man. During the Civil War age another book much like the book, 12 Years a Slave, that was published was Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Now Uncle Tom’s Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe who was an active abolitionist. The book was anti- slavery that depicts the reality of slavery while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as enslavement of fellow human beings. Then in the movie 12 Years a Slave the person who helped Solomon gain back his freedom was a preacher who also did not believe in the makings of slavery. Both of the books are similar in many ways on how they showed that many slaves tried to earn their freedom, but were shot down at any chance they received to earn it. These books show the pain and suffering that many slaves had to bear during slavery in the United States of America.
