01.05 West Meets East Meets West: the Byzantines
01.05 West Meets East Meets West: The Byzantines 1. How would you name the school? What would be its mascot? Explain your choices. * B.E High School. I chose B.E High School because it has relevance to the topic and it tells a lot in itself. The mascot could be something to do with a man that has maybe some kind of armor on. Or something that has to do with Byzantines. Something that has somewhat of relevance to the school’s name. 2. Why do you think symbols like a name or mascot are so important to the people of the city? * I think they are very important. Especially for the students, for rivalry purposes with other schools. And to show that it’s not only just a school name, but it actually means something that was a big part of history and will be with us for a long time. 3. Why would it be important to the students? * Again, it’s for rivalry purposes between other schools. If the name and mascot look and sound fierce, then it can put the students at ease. 4. What are two goals you could recommend the new principal to consider when opening up the new school? * Put the name of the school and the mascot to good purposes. Don’t just let the name and mascot be just a name and mascot. Make it mean more to the students, to the teachers, to people outside of the school, to the parents, to everyone and especially to you. 5. Identify two challenges that principal may have in achieving those goals? * Making the mascot come alive, that is going to be a challenger. And making the school name fit the school and its surroundings.
Now answer the following reflection questions, making sure to include information from the lesson. Again, be sure that you are writing in complete sentences. 1. How does this controversy relate to the development of the Byzantine Empire? * It started somewhere along with everything else and it was hard just like everything else. 2. How does this controversy differ from issues in the Byzantine

The Roman Empire had stretched so large by the fourth century CE that it had several provincial capitals. The two most important political centers were Rome in the West and Constantinople in the East, which had formerly been called Byzantium. The emperor, Constantine the Great, rebuilt Byzantium to resemble “Old Rome,” and so this political center became known as the “New Rome.” Although those who lived in Constantinople referred to themselves as Romans and were part of the Roman Empire, historians now refer to the peoples of the Eastern Roman Empire as Byzantines.…

First of all, most Native American logos are meant to honor Indians and their tribes, not offend. Some evidence of this is in the article “The Use of Indian Mascots”, page 2 when it states “Max Osceola, the chief and general council president of the Seminole tribe of Florida, has stated that he regards it as honor to be associated with the university.” This proves that some feel honored by Indian mascots, so sports teams should be allowed to use these logos.…

With today’s world moving so rapidly into the future, it is important that we not forget our past. Our history has defined generations, instilling within them a sense of appreciation for their own traditions and cultures. The scope of impact that culture has is so large, that it even extends into the world of sports. Thousands of teams across the country derive their names and mascots from ethnic groups, predominantly the Native Americans. Though they claim to be honoring these cultures, the names given to the teams are racially insensitive because they dehumanize, oppress, and discriminate against the cultural identities of these groups.…

Aside from professional sports teams having offensive names, high school and college teams also have offensive names. In Greenly, Colorado at the University of Northern Colorado, their mascot is the Fightin' Reds. Of course, this name sounds very racists, depicting Native Americans in a very harsh manner. Students on the basketball team renamed their team, The Fightin' Whites. They were trying to depict the 1950's style of the average American male. Their slogan for their team is "Every thang's going to be all white." By making this new mascot and new slogan, the basketball team was trying to get their city council to talk about the insensitive team mascots that their school, along with thousands of other schools have. In Eaton, Colorado the people who live there are amazed by all the madness that is going on about the school's mascot. They are perfectly happy with the mascot, and to them it seems like it would be breaking tradition if someone were to change their mascot. Even though there are many people who hate the school's mascot and vote for it to be changed, there are also some people who love it and do not want to be changed. Some people think it is a honor for a school's mascot to be named after their culture. But the number of people for the mascots do not even compare to the number of people opposed to the mascots. Like the old Black History Club our new club held the name yet we decided to use it as a more than just a club about African- American history. We were going to use it as a platform to bring people of all different races and ethnic backgrounds together not just African- Americans. In the first few meetings we had mainly talked about what happened at that basketball game and how it had affected all of our lives. We all agreed that this was not the Flower Mound we had grown up in and decided that we were going to leave that situation in the past and no longer discuss it. We focused more on everyone’s different cultural backgrounds and how it made us unique. We showed the school that just because the demographic was primarily white it did not mean that we all were. We were full of other cultures that should be embraced and…

Native American mascots are ethical. Ethics is defined as “a system of moral principles and rules, the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group or culture, and also a branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions” (dictionary.com). Native American mascots and logos for sports leagues has been a debate dating back as far as the late 1960s (Oguntoyinbo 2011). When talking about the ethics side of the argument, calling the images and logos unethical toward Native Americans is wrong because ethics, like the definition says, portrays to respect and class toward a group or culture. The purpose of mascots is to believe in something, to have a logo that brings teams and communities together for battle in sports, and to perform well and do your best so you stand tall and proud to be a part of your team and mascot. To be a warrior on a football field and literally have the warrior symbol, to be a brave, or the chiefs and represent honor, courage, and bravery would be astonishing.…

I take pride in the school i'm at. My highschool was based off of pride with the sporting events we participated in and even the band and choir. I've been a supporter of PSU spirit wise since the age of 13. I PSU apparel and all my favorite college teams are out of PSU. Spirit is one thing for me that's not at all a challenge. I would go to each and every game, partake in the student pride section and even tryout for mascot if possible. Going to PSU for me would be like going to Yale for a poor student. It's a dream of mine and if my dream happens to come true, i could easily return the…

I went to Linganore High School for four years. My high school got torn down completely after freshman year, mainly because it was a very old building, and then it was rebuilt from scratch. The school had changed in every way possible except for the name, location, mascot, and school colors. I believe that these items together create the continuation of identity for a high school. The name of the school to me is a really important characteristic that applies to the continuation of the schools identity. The name makes it different from every other school in the sense of how we refer to the school. Also for example every person has their own unique name although there are many people with the same name this is still a main factor in creating their own identity, which doesn’t change because they will always be the same name.…
