Lana Del Rey is the new sensation in the music world. Her studio album hits U.S. stores today and she’s at the tip of everyone’s tongue. Born as Elizabeth Grant in New York City and raised in Lake Placid, she is the daughter of an investor. Although she started out attending Fordham University in New York, her heart has always been with music. She decided to leave school and pursue her music career full time. In a previous interview from Vogue, Del Rey explains that she changed her name because she “wanted a name [she] could shape the music towards.” The name Lana Del Rey reminded Elizabeth and her Cuban friends of “the glamour of the seaside.” The name was born and the persona stuck.
Today, Lana Del Rey releases her studio album, Born to Die. Prior to the release today in the U.S., Born to Die has already reached number one in several countries across the globe. Reviews for the album have been mixed, to say the least. From scathing reviews to cheeful applause, Lana Del Rey has definitely endured all sorts of comments with regards to her Born to Die album. The Boston Globe‘s review expressed dissappointment and wants to see more confidence from Lana Del Rey. Many critics claim that “she’s a work in progress,” that “her voice is pinched and prim,” or that “the girl doesnt know whether she wants to be a classic Hollywood glamourpuss or a modern pop star.” Lana Del Rey is only twenty five years old and, as any artists knows, finding your voice and developing your craft can be a long journey.
Regardless of which review you read, the bottomline is that Lana Del Rey’s music is unique and worth a listen! Check out the track list for Born to Die below:
