Ani DiFranco: Which Side Are You On?

Between 1990 and today, the years without an Ani DiFranco album are few and far between. In fact, the only years without a studio album from DiFranco are 1997, 2000, 2002, 2007 and 2009-11. January 17, 2012 will end the rare three year hiatus, as Ani DiFranco releases her seventeenth studio album, “Which Side Are You On,” to stores.

DiFranco was born on September 23, 1970 and has been playing music since she was a young girl. In 1989, Ani DiFranco started her own record label, Righteous Records, on which she later debuted her self-titled album in 1990. After several studio album releases, Ani DiFranco’s label was renamed Righteous Babe Records, in 1994. DiFranco took many poetry classes at The New School, a university in New York City. According to her website, Ani “has never stopped evolving, experimenting, [and] testing the limits of what can be said and sung.” After her debut album in 1990, Ani DiFranco spent the next fifteen years touring, and living and breathing music. In addition to her studio albums, Ani DiFranco has had countless collaborations, live albums, and tour stops over the past twenty years of her career.

In addition to being a musician, Ani DiFranco is also an activist and her lyrics contain a multitude of overtones, ranging from politics to relationships. Her newest album, “Which Side Are You On,” continues with the wide variety of themes within her folk music. With regards to the new album, Ani asks fans and new listeners to “just listen, drop your idea of who is singing and what you already know they’re saying, and go somewhere else, open yourself up to a new story.” Check out the track list below!
