I read two short stories recently. Both were science fictions and both were very well written. One was about time travel. “The Sound of Thunder”, by Ray Bradbury, was about a man, Eckels, who wanted to shoot a Tyrannosaurs Rex. But this foolish man’s temperament was not very resilient like he had originally thought. When he saw the giant beast for the first time he became too scared, but not just scared—completely terrified. He scrabbled and ran away, off the Path, and changed the course of history, and in turn, the future, forever.…

“I picked up one of the books and flipped through it. Don't get me wrong, I like reading. But some books should come with warning labels: Caution: contains characters and plots guaranteed to induce sleepiness. Do not attempt to operate heavy machinery after ingesting more than one chapter. Has been known to cause blindness, seizures and a terminal loathing of literature. Should only be taken under the supervision of a highly trained English teacher. Preferably one who grades on the curve.” (Anderson)…

A short story is a brief yet succinct detail into someone’s life. It most often gives a history or background of the individual’s life, a decisive moment, which is further built up on and then leads to a culmination of events. The goal is to capture and maintain the reader’s interest throughout the story by utilizing a single thought provoking character, visual details and a climatic end. These features will keep the reader captivated to the very end of the story.…

“A book is a gift you can open again and again,” wrote Garrison Keillor. People read all the time. They read for information, for escape, for entertainment, for instruction, for guidance. They read recipes and tweets and texts. They read newspapers, blogs, and Facebook replies. In a recent survey by Pew Research, the number of people who actually read a book in the past year was 72 percent in 2015. I am one of those. As I consider my reading experiences, I realize they represent the journey I have traveled, leading me to my current academic path.…

When reading a short story, you may not be fully aware of how much you are actually getting out of it. Furthermore, besides entertaining us and teaching us new writing techniques, short stories contain valuable lessons that readers can learn from and apply to life.…

According to Edgar Alan Poe, a short story should be like a window into someone else’s life, in other words it doesn’t really matter what happened before and it doesn’t matter what’s going to happen after. The authors of the short stories I have read in class this year, using only that window, have made me feel sorry for the characters and angry towards the resentment the rest of the community shows them because they are different from others. Reading White & witchetty, the Dolls House and Josie has made me question my own values and beliefs.…

The short story that I enjoyed the most is the one titled Fear & Loathing in America. The short story was written by Hunter S Thompson. The short story is about the September 11 attacks on the twin towers and the Pentagon which were destroyed by passenger aeroplanes. I liked this story better because it is captivating, interesting and it kept me of the edge of my seat. The writer wrote about what happened on September the 11th 2001. The writer talks about how the crash on Tuesday happened and on that day he stopped writing about sports as it was now irrelevant. He talked about how ESPN changed from reporting sports to reporting news. From the first two paragraphs we can see that the writer wanted to stress out how the disaster was critical…

Yet, reading may become boring after becoming a man, makes me wish I read more growing up.…

It is important that students are exposed to many different aspects of writing. Exploring a unit of short stories offers students many opportunities to internalize and apply the knowledge they gain about reading and interpreting literature to the next story they read. They are more frequently exposed to the craft of using language, the literary devices that authors use, and how these can make a story work (or not work) for a reader. The short stories themselves contain underlying themes or motifs that challenge the students to draw broader conclusions from the material, encouraging students to think on a wider level about interconnected issues and themes that run throughout the materials.…
