Biology 1113 Writing Project: Impacts of Science on Society
GEC Learning Objectives:
• Students provide examples of the interdependence of scientific and technological developments.
• Students discuss social and philosophical implications of scientific discoveries and understand the potential of science and technology to address problems of the contemporary world.
Biology Learning Outcomes:
• Apply biological concepts in the assessment of contemporary issues.
A major goal of this course is to demonstrate the relevance of biology in society today. To that end, each student will submit a writing project that consists of a set of no fewer than four articles, along with a typewritten summary. Taken together, this group of articles should produce an integrated treatment of a selected topic in biochemical, molecular, or cellular biology. The summary should, in your own words, summarize the articles and how they relate to your selected topic. This is not simply a research paper, but a project intended to create discussion and exploration around important contemporary biological issues in society.
We have chosen The New York Times as the primary source for this assignment because of its commitment to scientific reporting and its reputation for being scientifically reliable. Other sources may also be used, but must have your TA’s approval IN ADVANCE (see the source list on the last page). The completed project will be due at the indicated time on the lab schedule, is worth 40 points, and will be submitted via upload to the dropbox on Carmen.
Article Requirements: o Four (4) recent articles from The New York Times (or another approved source - see the source list on the last page), that can be clearly linked to one another AND this course.

o

Articles will not be accepted from scientific journals, encyclopedia sources, or from most sources that are online only.

o

All articles used must be current (i.e., published within the last 6 months).
