1

Agenda
• Fundamentals of Troubleshooting
• Local Configuration Problems
• Internet Reachability Problems

PacNOG 2 Workshop

2

Fundamentals:
Problem Areas

• First step is to recognise what usually causes problems • Possible Problem Areas:
Misconfiguration
Configuration errors caused by bad documentation, misunderstanding of concepts, poor communication between colleagues or departments

Human error
Typos, using wrong commands, accidents, poorly planned maintenance activities

3

Fundamentals:
Problem Areas

• More Possible Problem Areas:
“feature behaviour”
Or – “it used to do this with Release X.Y(a) but Release
X.Y(b) does that”

Interoperability issues
Differences in interpretation of RFC1771 and its developments Those beyond your control
Upstream ISP or peers make a change which has an unforeseen impact on your network

PacNOG 2 Workshop

4

Fundamentals:
Working on Solutions
• Next step is to try and fix the problem
And this is not about diving into network and trying random commands on random routers, just to “see what difference this makes”

• The best procedure for “unfamiliar problems” is to
Start at one place,
Deal with one symptom, and learn more about it

5

Fundamentals:
Working on Solutions
• Remember! Troubleshooting is about:
Not panicking
Creating a checklist
Working to that checklist
Starting at the bottom and working up

    1. Net Present Value method is one of the methods used in capital budgeting. The NPV is based on the discontinued cash flow. A company that has a proposal for a new project or an investment uses the NPV method to decide if they should accept it or move on with a different investment. This method provides valuable information to the management about the cash outflows related to the investment and cash inflows from the investment with the consideration of the time value of money. The time value of money has been considered in this method because the money invested today will have a different value in the future.…

Female youth are experiencing higher rates of body dissatisfaction, depression, and anxiety (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016; Grosick, 2013; Mental Health America, 2016), which are often untreated (Mental Health Administration, 2015). Twenty percent of females age 12 to 17 report experiencing one or more major depressive episodes; three times the rate reported by male adolescents (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2015). A similar trend is found for anxiety symptoms and disorders; adolescent female experience rates of social anxiety (Beesdo, Knappe & Pine, 2009), specific phobias (Burstein, et al., 2012), and generalized anxiety disorder (Crozier, Gillihan & Powers, 2011) at rates higher than their male peers.…

The BFG is a book about a little girl from an orphanage named Sophie who is lying awake in bed one night and sees a giant walking the streets. She tries to hide once she has seen him but it is too late. He takes her out of her room and runs back to his cave. At first she is worried that he is going to eat her but he is not that type of giant. He is known as the Big Friendly Giant and eats disgusting vegetables that taste like rotting frogs. His main idea of fun is catching dreams and blowing the happy ones into children’s bedrooms at night. The other nine giants however are man eating giants and they go to different countries every night to eat people. They take them from their homes while they are sleeping and eat them. Sophie thinks these other giants need to be stopped but they are a lot bigger and meaner than the BFG. In the end she does come up with a plan to mix up a dream to tell the queen of England what is going on with these giants. Sophie and the BFG create a dream that tells the queen all about the bad giants and what they do at night and about her and the good giant. When the queen awakes Sophie is on her windowsill to confirm the dream and to help create a plan of action. After a very interesting breakfast during which the BFG is sitting on a piano piled with other things for his chair and a ping pong table on top of four grandfather clocks for his table then the queen invites the heads of the military in to create a plan. They decide to catch the giants while they are sleeping and carry them off with helicopters. In the end the bad giants are forced to stay in a huge pit and they are fed the disgusting vegetables that the BFG was forced to eat before. The BFG gets a nice huge house next to the castle and Sophie gets a little cottage next to him and the BFG writes a book about his experiences, which as we find out in the end is the BFG, the book we just read.…

Energy is the foundation of industrialized world; without energy, life as we know it would cease to exist. The yearly energy and fuel consumption rates have risen dramatically within the last years. This phenomenon is a direct result of globalization pressures, the international information network we call the Internet, and a population that seems to be hitting the dangerous upswing of the Malthusian curve. Although there is not yet a current shortage of conventional fuels, such as reserves of coal, oil and other fossil fuels are limited and non-renewable. In addition, the common practice of burning oil, coal, and other assorted hydrocarbons has resulted in hazardous environmental conditions such as global warming, acid rain and dangerously high air pollution levels. This and other environmental disasters have brought about a demand for alternative fuel and energy sources that are convenient, environmentally friendly, and economically viable. The U.S. Department of Energy defines alternative fuel as fuel that is essentially non-petroleum and yields energy security and environmental benefits. Following are some of the fuels the Department of Energy currently recognizes as alternative fuels methanol, hydrogen, liquid and compressed natural gas, and electric fuel. Alternative sources of energy are classified as energy provided from sources other than fossil fuels. This includes but is not limited to nuclear power, solar power, hydropower and biomass. Currently, many of these alternate sources are in use, but unfortunately they are underused or underdeveloped because of perceived shortcomings or drawbacks. While some of these fuel and energy sources may indeed lack the efficiency or cost effectiveness of the conventional fuel and energy, having a clean living planet far outweighs the cost of clean energy.…
