A Love Story in War
“The Things They Carried” is an interesting story. The story is about the group of soldiers who were fighting in Viet Nam War. They carried a lot of things such as weapons, foods, drinks and things to protect them whenever they go across the forest. The lieutenant Jimmy Cross is a sensitive guy. He had a girlfriend, Martha. He loved her a lot. He always thinks of her whenever he is free. He often took out her photo and look at it for a long time. He missed the time when they were together, when they were in cinema or when they were in Jersey shore. This love story is truly a wonderful story. His emotion showed that he love and miss her every single time even when he gazed at the tunnel.
Back to the journey of them to the west, they had to carry a lot of things and they had to suffer a lot of difficulty especially when their comrade died. That made Jimmy Cross felt so depressed. He missed his girlfriend and his comrade was died. That led Cross to the deep of sadness. He burned those letters from Martha but the image of Martha still in his head. We can see that how deep of his love for her but it seems like she does not love Cross anymore. Finally, he left everything behind and went ahead to the location and village in their mission in the war.
I love this story and the way the writer describe about the love story of the lieutenant. The idea of the writer is clearly that even though in the war, the soldier still has his emotion and still keeps his mind in his girlfriend. In the destructive condition (war and diseases) we still can feel the human’s emotion. The war does not bring any thing good. It makes people have to be apart from their love, and their family. They have to survive through their mission to come home.
