Abstract
Since the “The Big Bang Theory” (which I’ll refer to as ‘TBBT’ throughout this paper) first aired in the highly anticipated 2007 Fall Season on CBS (television station) it has grown astronomically in ratings and viewer loyalty, including myself to the viewership of millions per episode—a show that is of course a comedy sitcom focused on NERDS! I believe that TBBT shifts today’s stereotypes that nerds are socially awkward and inadequate members of society, to the fact that they’re truly brilliant, quite funny and actually more ‘normal’ than current society depicts them to be. In today’s society where most television entertainment is more focused on beauty over brains, TBBT explores and highlights the humor depicted by the main character’s impulses, quirks and social interactions. Nevertheless, TBBT puts nerds in a new light! [page break]

“The Big Bang Theory”, A Television Sitcom
Introduction
As stated beforehand, I believe that TBBT shifts today’s stereotypes that nerds are socially awkward and inadequate members of society, to the fact that they’re truly brilliant, quite funny and actually more ‘normal’ than current society depicts them to be. Ever since the show premiered in Fall Season of 2007, it’s steadily increased it’s ranking, viewer loyalty and influence on today’s society. * How so?

* Why does it matter?
* What’s the BIG picture?
* How is TBBT different from other sitcoms?
A bit of background on the show, if you haven’t seen a single episode or know it as well as I do…The show is centered on five characters: roommates Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper, two physicists employed at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech); Penny, a waitress and aspiring actress who lives across the hall; and Leonard and Sheldon's equally geeky and socially awkward friends and co-workers, aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz and astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali. The geekiness and intellect of the four guys is contrasted for comic effect with Penny's social skills and common sense.

According to Entertainment Weekly, TBBT has had some notable awards and recognition over the years. The show, which is filmed in front of a live audience, is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre Productions. (9) In August 2009, the sitcom won the best comedy series TCA award and Jim Parsons (Sheldon) won the award for individual achievement in comedy. (10) In 2010, the show won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Comedy, while Parsons won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. (11) On January 16, 2011, Parsons was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical, an award that was presented by co-star Kaley Cuoco.

TBBT began airing in the not-so-popular Monday night timeslot, but after the third season premiered on September 21, 2009, The Big Bang Theory ranked as CBS's highest-rated show of that evening in the adults 18–49 demographic, along with a then-series-high 12.83 million viewers. (10-12) CBS moved the show to Thursdays at 8:00 ET for the 2010–2011 schedule. (Thomas) Furthermore, it was promoted to the ever-popular Thursday night comedy line-up, which I find to be a direct reflection of the show’s success and acceptance by the masses and television network executives to boot! Method
The way in which I came to my conclusion, is I (along with millions of others Nation-wide) am a HUGE fan of The Big Bang Theory television sitcom, ever since it began back in 2007. I’ve literally tuned in to watch every. single. episode! I’ve even managed to invest in purchasing all the Seasons for my own personal DVD collection. So never the less, I’m a fanatic of the show and know it’s characters...
