COURSE DESCRIPTION: This a joint course between Southern University and Louisiana State University. The course is designed to address a multiracial audience derived from the student bodies of Louisiana State University and Southern University. The course will have three major objectives. Students will (1) examine the question of race relations in an interdisciplinary setting to include historical, sociological, political, and literary viewpoints; (2) recognize the genesis, evolution and dissemination of racial/ethnic prejudices, conflicts and tensions as well as the recognized dynamics of interracial harmony; and (3) apply these newly acquired critical perspectives to analyze and compare selected topics and related texts.

Attendance and Assignments: This course meets Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. Since the course is held alternately at Southern University (SU) and Louisiana State University (LSU), please pay careful attention to the location indicated on the syllabus for that particular class day. Reading assignments not in the textbook are indicated on the syllabus and will be distributed the preceding class period. Students are responsible for keeping themselves up-to-date on all assignments.
Class Policies and Requirements
Regular attendance and conscientious reading are mandatory. Class will begin on time and therefore students are required to attend all classes in a punctual manner. Attendance will be recorded at each class period. Students are responsible for all work missed during their absence from class. There will be no make-up work given for in class assignments, no work will be accepted late, and no make-up exams will be given. Attendance is mandatory on the days films are shown. There may be short quizzes given at the end of each viewing. No extra credit will be given at the end of the semester to compensate for not having lived up to class requirements. All of the weekly readings must be completed before the next class session. Random talking and whispering, or side bar conversations are not permitted; all speech should be directed towards classroom topics in a respectful and civil manner. Goals and Objectives:
Study the theoretical position that race and ethnicity are socially constructed. 2.
Understand that the stratification of race and ethnicity is a very real and intangible phenomenon that creates both barriers and opportunities that in turn affects people’s life chances. 3.
Learn the difference between individual and institutional racism. 4.
Examine your own ideas and positions about race and ethnicity. 5.
Acquire tools to combat both individual and institutional racism.
Grades will be based on major assignments, the final exam, and class participation.
