Chapter 1 – Accounting Information Systems
AIS (Romney) is een systeem voor betrouwbare informatie t.b.v. besluitvorming en verantwoording bestaat uit mensen, procedures, en systemen met als hoofdfuncties: het verzamelen en opslaan van gegevens over bedrijfstransacties zodat de organisatie kan vaststellen wat er is gebeurd het management voorzien van relevante besluitvormingsinformatie het zorgen voor adequate beheersmaatregelen om te waarborgen dat de informatie en bezittingen van de organisatie betrouwbaar zijn en bezittingen beschermd worden
Benefits of information:
- Reduction of uncertainty
- Improved decisions
- Improved ability to plan & schedule activities
Costs of producing information:
- Collecting data
- Processing data
- Storing data
- Distributing information to users

Characteristics of use information:
- Relevant: it reduces uncertainty by helping you predict what will happen or confirm what already has happened, improves decision making.
- Reliable (betrouwbaar): free from error or bias, geeft een nauwkeurig beeld weer van organisatorische evenementen of activiteiten.
- Complete: doesn’t omit (achterwege laten) important aspects of the events or activities it measures.
- Timely (op de juiste tijd): provided in time for decision makers to make decisions.
- Understandable (begrijpelijk): presented in a manner you can comprehend and use.
- Verifiable (verifieerbaar): two independent, knowledgeable (slim) people produce the same result.
- Accessible (toegankelijk): available to users when they need it and in a format they can use.

Information is provided to both external users & internal users.

Functies van een Accounting Information System (AIS)
- Collecting and storing data about the activities performed by the organization.
- Transforming data into information.
- Providing adequate controls to safeguard the organization’s assets including the data.
