The Strategic management process Step 1a: Defining the business Abul Khair Group started in the business race in 1953 founded by Late Mr. Abul Khair with what was considered a nominal investment during that period, the traditional business was set up focusing on Biri (Handmade cigarettes) coupled with other allied businesses. Abul Khair Tobacco in the traditional sector earned the highest reputation and became the market leader in the country. Over time, the group focused in diversification and it has gradually shaped up the existing business with strong presence in Cement, Steels, Tobacco & Biri (handmade cigarettes) including manufacturing and marketing of consumer goods of diversified range besides it’s well set trading business. Currently, it is one of the leading and successful business houses in the country. In 2010, the group is aiming to attain USD $500 Million being its annual turnover. The company is still looking for more investment in the area of its expertise.
Abul Khair Group has been significantly contributing in the employment generation of the country as well as making strong contribution in the Government exchequer. It has its state of the art operations like Cement and Steel facilitating latest technology to take place in the country. At present it has created more than 10,000 + direct and indirect employment throughout the country. AKG maintains an amicable relationship with a number of well-established banks in Bangladesh. Among these banks are EXIM, Standard Chartered, City and Pubali Bank. AKG has acquired extensive credit lines form the City Bank and the Pubali Bank, giving them a competitive edge over their competitors. The group is managed by professionals which includes both expatriates & locals.
