1. In the following situation identify the implied population.

A recent report on the weekly news presented the findings of a study on the effectiveness of Onglyza, along with diet and exercise, for treating diabetes.

According to Bennett (2009), a population is defined as “the complete set of people or things being studied” in a statistical study. Given that the information is in relation to finding the success of a drug used to care for diabetes, the population would be individuals who experience diabetes. Therefore, the implied population is the entire individual’s who diabetics are. Individuals who are diabetics are those who were used to test the effectiveness of Onglyza, diet and exercise.

2. In the following scenario identify the type of statistical study that was conducted.

A Gallop poll surveyed 1,018 adults by telephone, and 22% of them reported that they smoked cigarettes within the past week.

I would say that this would be an observational study which is a study when specific characteristics of the subject are observed, but the characteristics are in no way customized by the researcher. The reason I say that this would be an observational study is because the sample population that was studied was not influenced by the researcher themselves. In addition based on the fact that this study was a poll, in which people were asked to answer the questions but no responses were influenced or manipulated with (Bennett 2009).

3. In the following scenario what is the statistic and the parameter it would estimate.

A recent study of 460 drivers age 70 and over by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 75% of those drivers had uncorrected vision problems.

The statistic would be the percentage of drivers which is (75%) of those having uncorrected vision problems in the sample of 460 drivers studied. The parameter that is estimated would be the population percentage of drivers having uncorrected vision among all drivers that are age 70 and over.

4. What type of sampling procedure was used to collect the data in the MM207 Student Data Set?

I say the type of sampling procedure that was used to collect the data would be “Simple Random Sampling” and “Convenience Sample”. The reason I say convenience sampling and simple random sampling is because this was a population that was readily available; which are the college students and also because the ability to pull many data variables from college students such as gender, gap, and hair color as examples

5. From the MM207 Student Data Set identify one variable that is discrete and one variable that is continuous. Explain your reasoning. How do you know?

a.) Discrete: Gender this would discrete because it’s mainly one or the other, male or female and since studies states discrete consist of indissoluble categories, similar to male or female. In addition because it takes only specific values (male or female).

b.) Continuous: Q3- Height in inches – I say height and inches because height is able to take any value within a range and also because height has many variances in inches is not a single number. Since our studies states that a continuous variable is dividable into a countless numbers of fractional parts. An example would be when I utilize Stat Crunch; the returned mean for height was 65.18125.

6. From the MM207 Student Data Set identify the following:

a) A variable measured at the nominal level of measurement.

I would have to say that gender would be a variable at the nominal level of measurement; this has been assigned a name.

b) A variable measured at the ratio level of measurement.

As far as the variable measure at the ratio level of measurement I am going with Q3-Height in inches. Height would be a good ratio measurement because it is an interval scale and has an absolute zero.
