In my six months of volunteer work in your Institution, I have learned and enhanced my skills more effectively through assistance of excellent and outstanding doctors, staff nurses and other medical employees. As a nurse, I have achieved successfully the different roles. And listed below are the following: Emergency Room
I have been exposed to different cases and scenarios in this area and flexibility is one factor I had improved. Since I have an IVT license, I have also improved my skills in IV insertions and giving medications in different routes. My standard first aid training and CPR for health care providers in Red Cross helped a lot in this area. I had applied all my recent trainings all in this area and in some cases in the ward. The first role of a nurse while on duty is assessing patients and incoming patients to prioritize which includes taking vital signs and taking subjective and objective data, history taking and rendering independent nursing interventions. Next is which is to be referred to the physician on duty and carry out orders in giving the appropriate management and medication. I had also experienced admitting patients and understand well enough there cases and endorse it to the ward with the appropriate management ordered by the doctor and independent nurse interventions and management. Referring laboratory results to doctor and/or other complaints and untoward signs and symptoms of patients to the doctor and to transcribe orders is another role of a nurse that I had practiced. In emergency cases like vehicular accidents and other critical cases, I have assisted in doctors and staff nurses in resuscitation and revival especially on respiratory distress and cardiac arrests. I am also allowed to ECG patients. In the minor operating room, I prepare instruments, supplies and the area for a specific operation. I have assisted doctors and also had a chance to be mentored in minor operation like suturing, incision and drainage, removal of suture, ungeictomy, wound dressing, excision, excoriation, irrigation, cauterization and etc. and doing after care after each and every minor operation. I experienced to transfer patients who are critical to a higher hospital or the hospital of choice of the patient because of lack of equipment and supplies. An example is when we had two patients who are wounded by a gun shot. To record all OPD, Emergency cases, medico-legal, animal bite and other specific cases in a log book is important to monitor the health status of the municipality and near communities is also a nurse’s duty.
In this area I proficiently prioritized patients according to severity. I experienced to look for patients record for history taking and health development for doctors to better diagnose or evaluate a patient; which is the importance of having a record.
Next is to take vital signs, assess or data collection. It is also here where patient has to get a consultation slip and to pay at the cashier for the consultation fee. There are some cases that patients have fever so we had to give them paracetamol and for hypertension patients and let them lie in a bed and give Oxygen inhalation while waiting for the doctors’ order.
First prenatal check up are all required to undergo laboratory examination as the hospital protocol which can be offered by nurses like me who are also assigned in this area. We also take and monitor fetal position and fetal heart rate through Leopold’s maneuver but doctor always advise to UTZ to pregnant mothers for more effective assessment.
After all history taking or data collection, I have to assist the doctor during consultation hours and this also serves as a witness in every consultation between the doctor and patient.
Labor Room and Delivery Room
More of a routine is observed in this area. Since there is like only four expected scenarios. Assessment and being referred to the doctor are initial work for...
