Romeo and Juliet Acts 4 and 5 Summary
Act IV, Scene II
Capulet, the Nurse, and some servants are preparing the wedding when Juliet returns and begs Capulet’s pardon. He forgives her immediately, and he is so happy about Juliet’s obedience that he changes the wedding day to Wednesday.
Juliet: I have learnt me to repent the sin of disobedient opposition to you and your behests, and am enjoin’d by holy Lawrence to fall prostate here to beg your pardon –She kneels down- Pardon, I beseech you!
Capulet: Send for the County, go tell him of this. I’ll have this knot knit up tomorrow morning.
Juliet asks the Nurse to help her prepare for her wedding and they go together to Juliet’s closet.
Act IV, Scene III
Juliet tells her mother and the Nurse that she wants to be alone and they leave her alone. Juliet is scared of drinking the poison because many things could happen, for instance, the poison could not work or it could be a trick and she could die. But then she imagines Tybalt’s ghost seeking for Romeo and she decides to drink it.
Juliet: […] O look! Methinks I see my cousin’s ghost seeking out Romeo that did spit his body upon a rapier’s point. Stay, Tybalt, stay! Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Here’s drink, I drink to thee. Act IV, Scene IV
Capulet, Lady Capulet, the Nurse, and the servants are making the last preparations for the wedding. They don’t know anything about Juliet’s plan. Then Capulet says that Paris has arrived and tells the Nurse to awake Juliet and prepare her for the wedding.
Capulet: […] Go waken Juliet, go and trim her up, I’ll go and chat with Paris. Hie, make haste, make haste, the bridegroom he is come already, make haste I say.
Act IV, Scene V
The Nurse goes to Juliet’s room and tries to wake her up. She thinks Juliet is asleep but then she realizes she’s dead. Then Lady Capulet enters the room and the Nurse tells her Juliet is dead.
Nurse: Mistress, what mistress! Juliet! Fast, I warrant her, she. Why lamb! Why, lady! Fie, you slug-a-bed! Why love I say! Madam! Sweet heart! Why,
