EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This project has been undertaken in order to highlight the Human Resource Practices of “Ufone”. It’s all about YOU its all about “Ufone”, a company very highly spoken of these days. A company paying more attention to its customer’s delights rather then the customer’s satisfaction. Ufone is a company starting from scratch and has shown utmost performance in the last four years. Ufone owes its success to its employees believing that providing employees with job satisfaction, motivates them to work hard and provide better results.

Proper planning is Ufone’s strongest point; all the products that they have launched so far are backed by wise strategies with proper market research and massive advertisement campaigns. Decisions are taken at top level with some participation from the lower levels showing that they do comprehend the worth of Group decision-making. However goal setting is a procedure dedicated to only the top management. Working on newer technologies is a specialty of ufone

INTRODUCTION TO THE COMPANY

PTCL had started its operation in January 2001 under the brand name “UFONE”, as a result of PTCL privatization. In 2006 it became the part of the Emirates Telecommunication Corporation Group ( Etisalat ). Ufone has build a subscriber base of over 20million in less than a decade. Ufone has network coverage in 10,000 location and across all major Highways of Pakistan.Ufone is the second largest GSM network in Pakistan.

Ufone currently caters for international roaming to more than 260 live operators in more than 150 countries. It is offering Pakistan’s largest GPRS and roaming Coverage available with more than 150 live operators in more than 150 Countries.

HISTORY OF UFONE:

Ufone PTML is a wholly owned subsidiary of PTCL established to operate cellular telephony. The company commenced its operations, under the brand name of Ufone, from Islamabad on January 29, 2001
During the year, as a consequence of PTCL’s privatization, 26% of its shares were acquired by Emirates Telecommunication Corporation (Etisalat). Being part of PTCL, the management of Ufone has also been handed over to Etisalat. During the year July 2005 to June 2006, Ufone continued on the path to success. The Company further expanded its coverage and has added new cities and highways. Ufone has network coverage in more than 750 cities, towns and across all major highways of the country.

During the year Ufone successfully completed the network expansion of Phase IV in existing as well as in new cities and towns, which amounted to more than US Dollar 170 million. As a result the asset base of the Company has increased from Rs. 20 billion to Rs. 27 billion. During the year Ufone adopted the policy of simplified tariffs with no hidden charges, which resulted in positive impacts on the usage trends of subscribers as well as total subscriber base, which has increased from 2,579 k in June 2005 to 7,487 k in June 2006. Ufone currently caters for International Roaming to more than 200 live operators across 121 countries and introduced International roaming facility for Prepaid subscribers in Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Portugal, Thailand, Cyprus, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Tunisia and Kuwait with lowest rates, featuring no security deposit and activation charges. GPRS Roaming facility is available with more than 90 Live Operators across 66 countries. The company has also been awarded a new License for providing cellular services in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Northern areas.

CASE STUDY:

Terms & Conditions for Availing Cellular Connection, Purchase & Use of SIMs (24th February 2012) | | All the contents stated herein form the terms and conditions (the “Terms and Conditions”) for availing cellular services of the Operator (the “Services”), purchase of cellular connection (the “Connection”) and use of SIM/Equipment while availing the Services. In these terms and conditions the words and expressions used herein but not defined shall have the same meaning assigned to them in the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act, 1996, Rules issued by the Federal Government under section 57 of the Act, Regulations issued by the Authority from time to time, Policies and SOPs issued by PTA, Operator’s License and Terms and Conditions and conditions available on operator’s website. | | | Purchase & Activation of SIM: | | Purchase of Connection: The purchaser shall ensure that SIM is purchased only from authorized sale point (i.e. company’s own customer sales / service centers, authorized franchisees and registered retailers; hereinafter collectively referred to as the “Seller”) on presentation of the Original CNIC/Form B / Passport with valid visa/NARA ID, whichever is applicable. For foreigners & aliens, copy of the document will be retained by the seller and forwarded to the Operator within the time stipulated by the Operator in this regard. | | Activation of SIM: The Customer shall insert the SIM in the terminal equipment, call 789 for activation giving name & CNIC and answer the questions aimed at verification including name, CNIC (CNIC of purchaser if different from the customer), mother’s name, place of birth, confirmation of agreement with the Terms & Conditions (as stated below) and declaration of misuse of Connection/SIM. On successful verification, the operator will ensure activation of SIM within 24 hours. | | Customer’s Acknowledgment & Undertaking: | | Customer agrees and accepts all the Terms and Conditions including these and ones available on Operator’s website unconditionally by answering the questions and activation through code 789. The customer can, however, retain subscription by informing operator in written, fax, email etc. to retain the subscription for any specific period on payment of some charges (if any). | | Liabilities: | | The customer shall be personally responsible for all calls, SMS and MMS made from the customer SIM /terminal equipment and shall neither use, send nor permit any other person to use the system and service for sending inter alia unsolicited, obnoxious, misleading, indecent, obscene, or false messages, calls or communications; or the persistent making of calls which may cause annoyance to any person. | | The customer shall be responsible for apprising Operator within twenty four (24) hours of any change in information provided by him/her/it. These terms and conditions shall be subject to the provisions of the Act, Rules, Regulations, license conditions and directions issued by the PTA from time to time. |

Canadian firm, Ufone sign contract:

Minister for Information Technology Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari said international companies entering into partnership for supply and installation of equipment would be required to spend on research and development by utilizing human resource available in the country.

The minister stated this while speaking at the signing ceremony of a $125

million contract between Ufone and a Canadian firm for launching the phase-IV of the Ufone's extension/expansion plan.

Under the contract, the Canadian firm would expand the Ufone GSM and

GPRS networks to more than double of the existing capacity. The contract also include up gradation of existing wireless systems and supply of new GSM/GPRS core network and radio access equipment with a state-of-the-art Base Transceiver Station (BTS). Mr Leghari said: "We do not want to treat these venders as mere providers of equipment, but a strategic relationship to divert a certain percentage of the contract money to research and development activity within the country."

By virtue of the agreement, companies would also be required to utilize country's human resource in research and development of their IT-based systems being developed globally, the minister said, adding that this would help create around 40,000 jobs in the IT sector. The minister recalled that at the time he took over the ministry, Ufone was stuck into issues pertaining to lack of transparency, decision-making and vision to compete in the rapidly growing telecom market of the country. However, during the last two years Ufone has come of age with its subscriber base of 500,000 until May this year, jumping three times higher to 1.6 million in merely three months, he added.

He said the company would touch 3.5 million subscribers base after the implementation of the phase IV of the ongoing expansion plan that would be completed in six months.

Mr Leghari said the government was committed to the promotion of telecommunication sector, and he was foreseeing this facility reaching most of the country's households in the next two years due to the arrival of around 100 companies in the fixed-line sector and two more operators in the mobile sector.

Ufone Chief Executive Babar A. Khan termed the agreement with the Canadian firm a historic day for Ufone which he said had always believed in providing top-quality service to its subscribers.

"We at Ufone do not oversell our subscription as our major thrust is providing top-quality service," he added. He said it was the first time ever in the history of Pakistan's cellular service industry that an expansion contract of this size had been awarded at a single time, manifesting Ufone's solid and aggressive commercial drive and commitment towards market growth and

expansion.

Minister of State for Information Technology Ali Asjad Malhi said he was amazed by the response shown by foreign and local companies in investing in the sector.

Mobilink & Ufone signed Agreement for Tower Sharing:

Setting a precedent of unique collaboration, Mobilink, Pakistan’s largestcellular service provider and a subsidiary of Orascom Telecom Holding (OTH), and Ufone, an Etisalat group company, signed an accord for tower sharing.
The agreement was signed between Rashid Khan, President and CEO of Mobilink, and Abdul Aziz, President and CEO of Ufone at the Mobilink House. This collaborative effort is in line with the initiatives taken by the Pakistan Telecom Authority and the Federal Government to encourage cellular providers to drive greater efficiencies while reducing the carbon foot print.
Sharing his views, Rashid Khan said, “This alliance is mutually beneficial and will also facilitate us to better align ourselves with our strategic initiatives and become greener. This will further enhance Mobilink’s coverage footprint, already the widest, hence, bringing more value to the customer which is our top priority.”
Commenting on the accord, Abdul Aziz, CEO Ufone, said, “Ufone has had a keen interest in exploring newer avenues for our “Go Green” initiative and this tower sharing alliance is another step forward to further enhance our initiative. With this alliance Ufone has moved ahead to ensure customers have seamless connectivity no matter where they are in the country. This

follows similar alliances with other operators hence allows us to create a positive network layout most beneficial to the customer”
Through sharing of their network infrastructures the two cellular providers will be able to enhance the customer experience by offering a wider coverage footprint, driving synergies and reducing their respective carbon foot prints.

Ufone agreement to improve golf in the country:

In the Islamabad Ufone Pakistan did a contract with the golfer of the country to promote golf. This is an effort of Ufone Pakistan to promote the culture in the country. By this contract Ufone will take steps to boost this game through out the country. Pakistan top 3 golfers Mr. Shabir Iqbal, Mr. Matloob Ahmed and Mr. Munir Ahmed and junior champion Mr. Mubariz Ahmed signed this agreement. Mr. Abdul Aziz president and CEO of Ufone Pakistan with few other officials were also present in this event and he

hoped that with this effort Ufone will help the sports activity and the players for and it will develop better sports culture.

Ufone has a competition with four network operators, operating within
Pakistan which are Warid , Telenor , Zong and Mobilink.

MOBILINK:

Ufone believe that its biggest competitor is Mobilink and its target is to beat Mobilink and get its position but still it cannot do so. This company was operated in 1994 by Motorola but later it was sold by Orascom, an Egypt company and has become the market leader both in terms of growth as well as having the largest customer subscriber base in Pakistan - a base of over 31 million and growing. Mobilink pride ourselves on being the first cellular service provider to operate on a 100% digital GSM technology in Pakistan that also provides state-of- the-art communication solutions to its customers. It has a great experience of over 15 years and its business is expand in all over the world, means it is dependent in international market. Now it is also penetrate in internet line (DSL) and it is gaining profit from both sides. So Ufone and any other company should need some time to beat this developed company which is penetrate in all over the world.

TELENOR:

It is also a developing company in Pakistan which is growing frequently in cellular market. It is a cellular company of Norway. The company has covered several milestones over the past twenty eight months and grown in a number of directions, Telenor have grown to become a leading telecom operator in the country It is currently ranked as 6th largest mobile phone operator in the world with more than 195 million subscriber. Telenor are the fastest growing mobile network in the country, with coverage reaching deep into many of the remotest areas of Pakistan. In the most difficult terrains of the country, from the hilly northern areas to the sprawling deserts in the south, at times we are the only operator connecting the previously unconnected. Now it enter in the market of Asia and it has more than 1

million subscribers in Pakistan. It also introduce its branch company

( Djuice, Talkshawk, Persona ). Its currently ranked as 2nd largest network in Pakistan but Ufone also beat this company last year and they are hoping to beat them again and take 2nd position.

WARID:

It is a Abu Dhabi company. In 2004 Warid telecom purchased a license for operating a mobile network in Pakistan. It is also offering low rate mobile packages for calling and instant messaging. It has more then 1 million subscriber. Its prepaid brand “ Warid Zem “ got a very great response from customers. The customers of Warid are enjoying many value added service, such as MMS, GPRS, Corporate packages for product advertising. It also offered International Roaming for its postpaid and prepaid customers. Glow is also an innovative brand from Warid which target the youth of Pakistan. It is ranked as the fourth largest.

ZONG:

Zong is the first international brand of China mobile being launched in Pakistan. It capture a big market of Pakistan within no time, it offers a low rate packages not only of local network but also for international network. It is giving lowest internet rates of 5 Rs for 1hr. Ufone has a big challenge to expend its market in the presence of these competitors but they are improving there position day by day in the market.

CONCLUSION:

Telecom industry is most growing industry of Pakistan, still huge investment is required for coverage. The market also has the strong competition after the entrance of China mobile company as player. Competitors are hiring professionals to entertain the customer which is resulting technological implementation and value added services. People are worried about call rates they donot prefer any particular company. Consumer searches good services with lowest rates, although companies are minimizing call rates this will result more growth in the market. Ufone make agreements and amazing packages to attract the customer. The Ufone promote their product through TV commercial, Newspaper, radio, billboards, internet etc. Ufone is giving special allowances and benefits to its customers. It is in the form of free utility bills ( electricity, gas, water etc ), high salaries, mobile phones, special compensation on fuel expense, provide free laptops. They also give certificates at the end of the year. That is the reason there employees are loyal to there company, as a result there growth is increasing more than 18% comparing with other cellular company. The choice of people is Ufone because its price level is low and it make a lot of contracts with other companies to give relief and provide benefits to its customers. Some of the contracts have been mentioned in the above case study, all of those are in the favour of the customer. Ufone always think about their customers and for this reason they are targeting the middle class and make contract with maximum no. of companies in Pakistan and have occupied the great position in the cellular market. Thats why everyone can say “Its all about U"
