Bradley and Leavis both agree on the fact that Othello never reaches a complete Peripateia, but for vastly different reasons A. C. Bradley’s argument is that “The Othello of the fourth act is Othello during his downfall. His fall is never complete but his grandeur remains almost undiminished”. This demonstrates to us that Bradley accepts the fact that Othello’s downfall is never truly complete, but he remains steadfast in his view that Othello retains some form of nobility and honour. He sees Othello as “Virtually faultless”. We can see this when he says “Othello does not belong to our world, and he seems to enter it we not know whence – almost as if from a wonderland”. This displays to us the extent to which Bradley sees Othello as a pure, faultless figure.…

Othello, Shakespeare In Shakespeare’s play Othello, Iago uses racial distinction to persuade Othello into believing there is an affair between Desdemona and Cassio. Iago feeds upon Othello’s insecurities to raise his fury. Othello's self-doubting eventually leads to downfall; his doubt within himself causes him to distrust Desdemona and her love for him. Othello uses his race as his scapegoat for his belief in being poor spoken and revolting, as he states, “My name, that was as fresh as Dian’s visage, is now begrimed and black as mine own face” (III.iii.441-43). As Othello falls deeper into his fury he is seen as regressing back to his vicious native heritage. Iago continues to feed the fire pointing out Othello’s savage actions, for example, “I have seen the cannon when it hath blown his ranks into the air and, like the devil, from his very arm puffed his own brother…”(III.iv.154-59). As the story progresses Iago pushes Othello into uncertainty and drives him mad.…

Iago has his honor, in his opinion, irreversibly damaged. Thus the antagonist arrives, determined for revenge. Unnaturally paranoid, Iago is assuming that not only has Othello gone against him and not promoted him, but that Othello has probably slept with his wife, Emilia as well. Though it is known he does not have much love for his wife, she is a part of his honor as well. However, Iago has a unique approach to betrayal and revenge. Iago takes his place beside Othello and strengthens his relationship with him, giving him the oppritunity to make bold and inappropriate statements that worsens his initial jealousy. At the same time, Iago would retreat back on his words and act unsure, making him seem more trustworthy and humble. “I do not like the office… and then cry “cursed fate that gave thee to the Moor!”” (418-433.3.3) Many times Iago is ironically described as honorable, honest and trustworthy by Othello and Cassio – the two people he is manipulating the…
