Nostra Aetate: Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions

1. What contemporary reasons would cause mankind to draw “closer together” and to strengthen “the ties between different peoples”? (2)
Culture, common beliefs, sports, births, deaths, celebration, tragedy, reunions, weddings, music and war are all contemporary reasons that would cause mankind to draw closer together. Regardless of age or gender, one can still love a sport. When Steve Jobs passed away, the world mourned. Though tragic, death can bring many people together and teach them not to take everything for granted. Also, recently, the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton brought together many people all across the world – everyone was watching. Of course, war. Though war isn’t really recent, when soldiers died for Canada, people were brought together at the time, they were safer, closer in numbers. Also, protests bring people together to fight for a common belief. In this sense, all the reasons that bring people together and strengthen the ties together are because EVERONE has been affected. When something happens and EVERYONE is affected, it causes people to come closer together.
2. According to the Church, what three things draw people to fellowship? (3) i) “One is the community of all peoples, one their origin for God made the whole humans race to live over the face of the earth.” Basically, we are all human, and our origin is God, and we all share and live on the Earth together. ii) “One also is their final goal, God. His providence, His manifestations of goodness, His saving design to extend to all men.” – This means that the final goal of mankind is to reach God through Salvation, and that He will be our Saviour. ii) “Until that time when the elect will be united in the Holy City, the City ablaze with the glory of God where the nations will walk in His Light.” – That this glorious city of God, heaven will come to the people who are good.
These are the three reasons that draw people to fellowship.
3. List the questions that are examined by all religions. What is the basis of the universal need to recognize a Supreme Being? (3)
Some common questions that are examined by all religions are:
What is man?
What is the meaning, the aim of our life?
What is moral good, what is sin?
Why is there suffering and what purpose does it serve?
Which is the road to true happiness?
What are death, judgement and retribution after death?
What, finally, is the ultimate inexpressible mystery which encompasses our existence: whence do we come, and where are going?
The basis of the universal need to recognize a spiritual being comes from the course of events over human history. Since ancient times, among many people there is found a “higher power” or “hidden power” that is always influencing and hovering over everything that happens and many have come to the recognition of a Supreme Being or Father, and such a perception religiously influences their lives.
4. How do Hinduism and Buddhism attempt to answer the questions of life’s mystery?
In Hinduism, many people attempt to answer the questions of life’s mystery through myths and searching for philosophical inquiry. They seek freedom from the suffering of human condition by meditating or ascetical practices.

Years ago, a man was crucified for saying he was God’s Son. His name was Jesus Christ. Those who followed his teachings were named Christians; and Christians soon resented Jews for their sinful act. This tension between Christians and Jews lead to increasing hatred for one another. Not too long ago, anti-Semitism was common. Anti-Semitism led to the death of an entire population during the Holocaust. Luckily, the church has taken measures to rectify this anti-semitism with the publication of Nostra Aetate. In 1965, the Vatican II Council completely transformed the church’s policies and theology with this document. Nostra Aetate signifies “In Our Time.” Indeed, in our time, the ill sentiments towards Jews have changed tremendously. Nostra Aetate is a unifying document that has not only led to peaceful coexistence of the Catholic and Judaic faith but also understanding of many other faiths. Ultimately, it has enabled the education of Catholicism in universities, as well as in organizations.…

The Nostra Aetate declaration means "In our Time" in Latin. It discusses the relationship of the Church with Non-Christians, which was proclaimed by Pope Paul VI on October 28th of 1965. "What happened in Christ's passion cannot be charged against all the Jews, without distinction, then alive, nor against the Jews of today.... We cannot truly call on God, the Father of all, if we refuse to treat in a brotherly way any man, created as he is in the image of God. ... No foundation therefore remains for any theory or practice that leads to discrimination between man and man or people and people, so far as their human dignity and the rights flowing from it are concerned. The Church reproves, as foreign to the mind of Christ, any discrimination against men or harassment of them because of their race, color, condition of life, or religion." This is a quote from the Nostra Aetate. What I believe it means is, the people of the world are getting closer as time progresses and strengthening their bonds. The Church is now looking closer to the relations between Catholics and Non-Catholics and other religions, in order to help continue this transition of peace. The Nostra Aetate declaration condemned discrimination and persecution, and specifically denounced anti-semitism. The Nostra Aetate declaration of the Second Vatican Council set in motion a dynamic that continues to shape the modern Church. It is intended to be a teaching about the relation of the Church to people who belong to other religious traditions, with particular attention paid to Jews, Moslems, Hindus and Buddhists.…

There is one unanimous goal that every human being mutually strives to achieve, which is to simply be happy. According to Augustine, the true and greatest joy is joy in God. Even to those who have yet to believe in him remain drawn in toward some image of true joy, leading them on a quest to obtain its origin. We all yearn for it, yet the only path that will ever arrive at this destination is through God. To experience it without him is impossible. Any straying, disobedience, or refusal from God can only be caused by a human’s ignorance in acknowledging that God is the root of all good.…

At the same time the city also needs Public Christians to invest in the city and institutions. God is working in the cities and might be using the cities as a purpose of redemption. Christians must stay focused, keep an open mind, and take the city more seriously. They must remember that the choices they make will impact the future of their salvation. Both the Private and Public Christians could benefit from thinking more about the city as a whole and less about themselves individually. God is looking for a city that contains people who are willing to follow Him no matter what, and who long to have a healthy relationship with Him and everyone else. These relationships are needed in the city in order to fully populate the New Jerusalem and become all that God wants it to be. In our world today we can see who the Private Christians are and who the Public Christians are. This divide isn’t healthy for our world and we should constantly be looking for ways to improve our “city”. By understanding Jacobsen’s view of populating Jerusalem, and listening to what God commands us to do we can save our falling world one city at a…

Resemblance implies commonality, and that implies Society.
