1. Explain how the ecosystem was affected by the missing species for each round of the demonstration.

a. Round 1 =
b. Round 2 =
c. Round 3 =
d. Round 4 =

2. Provide one action we as humans engage in that leads to the extinction of each of these components.

Action affecting Lichens = Natural life such as trees are important for lichens to grow and with humans causing pollution which is affecting natural life such as trees ends up affecting everything in a vicious cycle. Action affecting Trees = Humans use of oil for fuel and coal which release carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causing pollution and therefore affecting natural life such as trees. Action affecting Flowers = Similar answer to that off actions affecting trees because it is the pollution that we are causing are killing the natural life. Action affecting Bees = With humans using pesticides, new biological agents, we cause a lot of bees to be affected by such actions.

    Bee Colony Collapse

The first reports of “a mysterious phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD)” appeared in October 2006 (Curley). CCD is when the majority of worker bees in a colony disappear, this can happen due to various reasons. This includes “pesticides, drought, habitat destruction, nutrition deficit, air pollution, global warming and more” (Save the Bees). Many of these causes are also interrelated. However, as previously stated, human are responsible for the creation and use of pesticides which is one of the most profound causes. Here, pesticides will be the primary focus. Insecticides were desired by farmers to kill pests that were farming their produce, however these highly toxic insecticides “were not very selective; their ubiquitous use and broadcast application techniques for crop protection meant that foraging honey bees entered the line of fire with frequent and fatal results” (Berenbaum). It took less than twenty years after the beginning uses of insecticides in order to obtain scientific evidence “that sprays on fruit trees to kill pest insects do, in fact, as a non-target effect, kill bees” (Berenbaum). Therefore, humans can be partially to blame for CCD and poisoning of…

Mrs. Carlson encouraged the audience that choosing Biodynamic products was an active step in supporting farmers who raised their food with the awareness of the relationship between plants, animals, people and the environment. The advantages of Biodynamic agriculture were put into terms regarding the connection between people, plants and pollinators. Following the introduction of this concept, Mrs. Carlson stated that more than 1 out of every 3 bites of food consumed by humans relies on bees and other pollinators. She continued to explain that synthetic pesticides can impact the health of our pollinators and farming monoculture results in hungry pollinators whenever the main commercial crop is out of flower. Mrs. Carlson then explained that Biodynamic farmers avoid synthetic pesticides that may be harmful to pollinators. That they also set aside at least 10% of their land for biodiversity, which means more variety of forage for various pollinators and bees. Healthy pollinators help grow crops, which translates into more of the delicious vegetables and fruit that we…

In conclusion, modern society is built on a set of pillars, one of which is bees, as bees provide the priceless gift of pollination for our crops. The recent decline in bee populations has been appallingly high, and points to the viable possibility of a bee extinction occurring in the near future. Without the fruits and vegetables for food, cotton for textiles and other produce bees pollinate, modern society would crumble at our feet. We pump poison into the air in the pursuit of a better profit from our crops. The bees suffer due to our greed, materialism and indifference. They suffer because we stay…

In the book, the falling population of bees alarmed scientists, who took action that ultimately caused the end of democracy. This poses a big threat in real life too. According to Elizabeth Grossman, the author of Chasing Molecules: Poisonous Products, Human Health, and other books, in 2013, beekeepers reported a loss of up to 50% of their hives, and the numbers of losses are still rising. Also, one out of every three bites of food was pollinated by a bee, which shows how much the extinction of bees could affect our economy. There are many theories as to what is causing the dropping population. Some scientists suspect that neonicotinoids, a systemic agricultural insecticide resembling nicotine, are to blame for the decline of the bee population.…

The Pros And Cons Of Bees

One challenge for bee keepers is the DWINDLING bee population. In fact, there numbers are dropping like green sea turtles once did. Around the year 2,000, bee keepers noted an average loss of 5 - 10% of bees. In 2,006 a loss of 30% was reported, and now there is a loss of 40 - 50%. This means that if we don’t stop to change our actions 75 % of the bees will be lost. Also it means that 75% of 1/3 of our food will be lost and 75% of the 15 billion dollars produced from bees will be lost. According to Bees Beware, “ we’re seeing a lot of colonies failing. The population is dwindling because of pesticides, nicotine. In the…

    Honey Bees Research Paper

For decades, the metaphorical story of the “Birds and the Bees” has been told to children in order to explain sexual intercourse. Since honey bees are an important part of the fertilization process among plants, also known as pollination, this story is a good way of speaking openly about the subject without using technical terms. When a honey bee lands on a flower, their feet slip into little grooves that hold pollen sacks which they carry with them until they land upon another flower. Once landing on another flower, the pollen falls out of the sac enabling the plants to fertilize and sexually reproduce. For this reason, agriculturalists welcome the presence of honey bees among their crops. National Geographic reported “an estimated 14 billion U.S. dollars in agricultural crops in the United States are dependent on bee pollination.” But within the past several years beekeepers have found a high population of weakened and dying honey bees. The last report of a similar issue occurring amongst the honey bees, was due to a parasitic bug called the varroa mite, but this time researchers have not found any such mite or pest and are beginning to suspect that the use of pesticides are the cause of this bee epidemic. The following research here will show how chemical pesticides are harmful to the environment, animals, and humans…

    The Truth About Pesticides

But what often times gets overlooked are the pollinators that are affected too. A pollinator is an animal that enables plants to make fruit or seeds by fertilizing them. “Only fertilized plants can make fruit and/or seeds, and without them, the plants cannot reproduce. In order to pollinate a plant, the pollinator must touch parts of the flower of the plant” (“What is a pollinator”). For this reason, animals like bees, hummingbirds, and some kinds of butterflies are the best pollinators, because they get their food from the flower of the plant causing them to brush up against parts of the flower (What is a pollinator). “When a bee collects nectar and pollen from the flower of a plant, some pollen from the stamens- the male reproductive organ of the flower- sticks to the hairs of its body. When the bee visits the next flower, some of this pollen is rubbed off onto the stigma, or tip of the pistil- the female reproductive organ of the flower. When this happens, fertilization is possible, and a fruit, carrying seeds, can develop (Pollination). Pesticides also stick to the bees hairs which results in it spreading to other plants, including wild plants. Once in the soil, pesticides leach into the water system…

There are many consequences for the environment of cutting down trees. Known as deforestation it has huge effects on the environment. It one very big effect is the loss of biodiversity which is a direct effect of cutting down trees. There are many reasons of which humans act out deforestation. For example is so that we can set up cattle farms. Also grow crops of which can then be sold to people. Another reason is for urbanisation and for the building of roads. However what people don’t know as a risk of cutting down trees is that many pharmaceutical companies produce their medicines from resources found in rainforest and so cutting trees down in these areas can mean the lack of useful medicines for western use this is because 25% of western medicine comes from such rainforests.…
