According to behavioral economists, consumers don’t always behave rationally, like a market (in theory) does, and they don’t make decisions based solely on facts or logic such as price or quality. Other psychological factors have an impact on decisions. This explains why very often, consumers become complacent when faced with the best value proposition. FEAR OF OVERPAYMENT The opportunistic mindset is engrained in how people shop today. People have an expectation to get a deal and will not very easily purchase if they are convinced they could find better. The way value is framed is key reassuring people that they are getting a deal. FAMILIARITY AND FEAR OF CHANGE We are creatures of inertia. If we’re accustomed to buying a certain type or brand of product, we’ll continue to buy it even if there might be a better choice. The “known” is familiar and comfortable.…

Mr. Edens is the CEO of Electronic Banking System Inc., a company that belongs to a small but expanding financial service. Before founding EBS, he worked as a financial controller for National Rifle Association. In this case you can see that he has a very strict control over his workers. The environment in which his employees have to work in is comparable to a cage. He requires them to process three envelopes a minute as well as being absolutely silent at the same time. Mr. Edens covers up all objects that could be used as a distraction to his workers. This enables the employees to be able to perform their job perfectly. His employee’s desks are pointed to cameras that are covered by plants that allow him to watch his workers whenever he wants to observe them. Because workers are not allowed to have a social life, they prefer to socialize with one another during their lunch break. Hard Candy is the only allowed snack during work and not focusing on the actual work is nearly impossible. If someone makes a mistake, an error message will appear on their screen saying so. Mr. Edens says no one is expected to think because the machines are doing all the thinking for them. All he expects is that everyone keeps working and that they do not waste any of his valuable time. Mr. Edens does not like people wasting his time, that is the reason why he has many harsh rules. While Mr. Edens’ employees have hard schedules with long shifts, it seems like the minimum wage does not compare to the amount of work they are assigned to finish. The workers that have a family have to manage their time wisely in order to be able to have any time with their family. It is complicated for them to be with their family because of the long shifts they have to work for Mr. Edens. These types of jobs are stressful on a persons life. Therefore, it makes trying to have a normal life outside of the business office is very hard. Even during the employees work breaks their life is sometimes influenced by…

Skimming Pricing Skimming pricing is the strategy of establishing a high initial price for a product with a view to “skimming the cream off the market” at the upper end of the demand curve. It is accompanied by heavy expenditure on promotion. A skimming strategy may be recommended when the nature of demand is uncertain, when a company has expended large sums of money on research and development for a new product, when the competition is expected to develop and market a similar product in the near future, or when the product is so innovative that the market is expected to mature very slowly. Under these circumstances, a skimming strategy has several advantages. At the top of the demand curve, price elasticity is low. Besides, in the absence of any close substitute, cross-elasticity is also low. These factors, along with heavy emphasis on promotion, tend to help the product make significant inroads into the market. The high price also helps segment the market. Only nonprice-conscious customers will buy a new product during its initial stage. Later on, the mass market can be tapped by lowering the price. If there are doubts about the shape of the demand curve for a given product and the initial price is found to be too high, price may be slashed. However, it is very difficult to start low and then raise the price. Raising a low price may annoy potential customers, and anticipated drops in price may retard demand at a particular price. For a financially weak company, a skimming strategy may provide immediate relief. This model depends on selling enough units at the higher price to cover promotion and development costs. If price elasticity is higher than anticipated, a lower price will be more…
