Throughout history, many native tribes have been subjected to the effects of colonialism. They are often stripped of their land and resources, and are forced to adapt to a new way of life. Their cultural values and even political presence weaken as they become a mere product of acculturation. There is no doubt that the clash of two unique societies with mismatched power usually has violent and unfair outcomes. However, there have been a few cases where the effects of colonialism did not completely penetrate the ideology and lifestyle of a culture. Living proof of this is the aboriginal Kayapo Tribe of the Brazilian rainforest who stood up against pressures from the outside world in order to preserve their way of live. Even though the Kayapo are outnumbered and are disadvantaged technologically, they have still been able to coexist with Brazilian society and maintain their cultural integrity.…

Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA) encourages the creation of plants using renewable/non-traditional energy sources and gives Federal Energy Regulatory Commission the regulatory power. These plants were classified as “qualifying facilities” and local utilities were required to buy all of the electricity produced by these qualifying facilities. Once deregulation is introduced, FPL Group will not be very affected by increased competition in the generation segment because of the previous investments in these qualifying facilities.…

Tidal locking results in the Moon rotating about its axis in about the same time it takes to orbit the Earth. Except forlibration effects, this results in the Moon keeping the same face turned towards the Earth, as seen in the figure on the left. (The Moon is shown in polar view, and is not drawn to scale.) If the Moon were not spinning at all, it would alternately show its near and far sides to the Earth while moving around our planet in orbit, as shown in the figure on the right.…

The Philippines is the second-largest producer of geothermal energy in the world behind the United States, with more than 1,900 MW of installed geothermal capacity. The government has set a goal of increasing this figure to 3,100 MW within a decade, which would make the Philippines the largest geothermal energy producer, surpassing the United States. Most geothermal power projects were developed by a division of PNOC, while two of the country’s largest projects were originally developed by Philippine Geothermal, Inc. (today known as Chevron Geothermal Philippines Holdings, Inc., or CGPHI, and formerly Unocal Philippines, Inc.). In March 2004, the Philippines kicked off the Department of Energy Geothermal Contracting Round (known as GEOTHERMAL 1), in an effort to sell off Napocor’s geothermal assets and attract private investors to new projects. As part of this process, there are currently a number of new geothermal power proj.…

It would supposedly contribute roughly 620 MW (Paredes, 2014) to the electric power needs of Luzon. This nuclear power plant was won and made by Westinghouse, an electric company in the United States along with the approval of the late President Marcos under the martial law and is headed by his crony, Herminio Disini (Paredes, 2014). As cronies of Marcos spearheaded projects during his regime, there is no doubt that there would be malicious intentions regarding the construction of the said projects like the construction of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (Josephson, n.d). The construction involved corruption wherein the original price that was set by Westinghouse is 1.1 billion dollars, then later on increased to 2.3 billion dollars (Onishi, 2012) which was the price for having two nuclear reactors. Also, the price set by Westinghouse was not approved by the National Power Grid Corporation general manager of that time because the baseline bid is only 500,000 dollars (Paredes, 2014). The cost of construction of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant would greatly impact the impoverished economy of the Philippines during that time because it would be paid using the loan from the US-Export – Import bank to Marcos which would lead to future generations to pay for the debt made by Marcos because the power…
