Working with patients with Dementia, duty of care is a key concept. Some times the patient can be confused and violent.
Firstly I would introduce myself to the patient and I would ask them if I could take their bloods while I am asking the patient for their consent I will also be assessing the patient and the surrounding. Sometime the patient will not understand what I am asking or if their are confused, if the patient then says no I would walk away. If I find a patient is being difficult, confused or violent, I would ask my co worker for help or I would found out who the nurse in charge or the nurse who is caring for that patient, I would then explain to her the situation. There are many organisations you can get help and support from i.e. Aged concern or social services. If the patients complain regarding the way I took their blood or I feel I would need to complain on the behavior of the patient my first port of call would be to go to the nurse in charge of the ward, if it’s a patient in outpatient I would go to my supervisor. On the hospital Internet you should be able to find a management tree chart the names of all the managers were you can fellow if you are not happy with the way in which your complaint is being dealt with, if its is for a patient then I would direct for the hospital service called PALS.
