Below is an overview of the education and career life of Dan Robertson, intern coordinator, manager of pilot hiring, manager of new-hire training, and former pilot for Atlantic Southeast Airlines.   All of the interview questions are given below along with their answers given in third person, except for direct quotations which are notated accordingly.

Job History

-1971—station manager at small corporate airline and flight instructor
-1973—became a pilot for a small corporate airline—it went bankrupt, along with others after that
-1981—became a pilot for ASA
-1983—was chief pilot and was put in charge of training standards
-later became sytem chief pilot, member of board of grievances, contract negotiations, and in charge of flight operations and standards manuals.
-He put together ASA’s first pilot handbook.

How and why did you end up working in management and leadership positions?

When he was young, he was critical to management—liked to complain.   After he was involved in three airlines that went bankrupt, he realized it was not all management’s fault.   This combined with an illness changed his philosophy.   He then wanted to be a “guide” and to become “part of the solution, not the problem.”   He worked very hard at ASA as a pilot, and they came to him asking him to take a management position—he did not have to ask.

What were your original goals in college and did they change?   If so, how?

At 20 years old he had no clue what he wanted to do.   During his senior year of college he realized he wanted a career in aviation.

What skills do you have that you feel help you with your job?

--Lots of experience in flight operations
