Household Budget In preparing our household budget, it was a bit surprising that we have such a small surplus after expenses. Many of our expenses, such as medical/dental/vision insurance, 401k contributions, and contingency savings are deducted prior to the net income calculation. When taking in the entire financial picture, we are doing well. Yet, I really believed that we had more of a monthly surplus. Any career change will have an impact on a household budget. Many factors need to be identified, like commuting time and expenses, increased or reduced salaries, elected optional benefits, and additional incidentals. Most often, one would change careers to increase their income, but sometimes they will do so as a stepping-stone to a better quality of life. Furthering one’s education will most always have a positive impact on the budget as better opportunities. There is a financial and time commitment to any educational experience, yet by continuing your professional development, you are telling employers that you have set goals, and worked to achieve them. This translates to being more appealing to prospective employers and/or appearing as a better candidate for career advancement. With career advancement comes increased income. As I am in the sunset years of my career, my careers are a bit different from those of my younger classmates. My husband and I look to retire thereby reducing our overall income. Yet, we may choose to supplement our pension and 401k distributions, taking on new career options, though at a much slower pace, less responsibility, and less salary. This we would most likely do as a bridge until we are able to access social security.

Budgeting is important especially for the small or medium size organisation which could not afford to waste any money on any investments that are not worth the price. Furthermore, a structured budget must be able to provide information of where the cash will be spent on and how the organisation gathered the sufficient amount of capital for future investment. It is important to keep track on the organisation’s cash flow as it provides important information on how much money available within the organisation. Insufficient cash flow within the organisation may lead to financial distress or worst, bankruptcy. However, too much cash flow within the company is not good either as the money should be used to invest into profitable projects rather than keeping within the company. Budgeting helps the organisation to prepare sufficient amount of cash flow within the company to help dealing with day-to-day expenses, at the same time, fully utilised the excess capital in profitable…

My significant other and I recently made a decision for me to quit my job and go back to school. Our decision was based on my unhappiness at work; however, we also started looking at the long-term financial security aspect of it. The alternatives considered were to pursue a health related job where I would be happier or, go back to school to acquire a nursing degree. We came to our final decision based on my dream of wanting to be a nurse. The future long-term marginal benefit, both financially and personal gratification far more exceeded the short-term marginal cost.…

The transition from a working life to the retirement years can be a difficult process for aging adults as giving up higher salaries for the amount paid for Social Security is drastically different. Forcing retired adults to look for supplement income during this stage at a lower status than previously held in a prior position. Most companies offer a pension or 401k plan to help employees plan for a better retirement as it is almost impossible to live on Social Security alone. This change also plays a large factor on how the individual views their personal self-worth. Instead of priding themselves in the knowledge of an occupation, retirement forces the person to give up that role in search of another source to occupy their time. (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2010). Transition from work to retirement Cont.…
