Induction type energy meter
Single phase induction type energy meter is also popularly known as watt-hour meter. This name is given to it. This article is only focused about its constructional features and its working. Induction type energy meter essentially consists of following components:

1. Driving system
2. Moving system
3. Braking system and
4. Registering system

Driving system
It consists of two electromagnets, called “shunt” magnet and “series” magnet, of laminated construction. A coil having large number of turns of fine wire is wound on the middle limb of the shunt magnet.

This coil is known as “pressure or voltage” coil and is connected across the supply mains. This voltage coil has many turns and is arranged to be as highly inductive as possible. In other words, the voltage coil produces a high ratio of inductance to resistance.

This causes the current and therefore the flux, to lag the supply voltage by nearly 90 degree.

An adjustable copper shading rings are provided on the central limb of the shunt magnet to make the phase angle displacement between magnetic field set up by shunt magnet and supply voltage is approximately 90 degree.

The copper shading bands are also called the power factor compensator or compensating loop. The series electromagnet is energized by a coil, known as “current” coil which is connected in series with the load so that it carry the load current. The flux produced by this magnet is proportional to, and in phase with the load current.

Moving system
The moving system essentially consists of a light rotating aluminium disk mounted on a vertical spindle or shaft. The shaft that supports the aluminium disk is connected by a gear arrangement to the clock mechanism on the front of the meter to provide information that consumed energy by the load.

The armature of a contactor is connected by a mechanical linkage to a set of contacts that causes a completed circuit when the armature is pulled into the magnetic field produced by the coil. The coil characteristics depend on the type of wire and the manner in which it is wound. Coils are designed to operated on 24volts, 120 volts, 208/240 volts, and 480 volts. Contactors are rated by the ampere draw they can carry. There are two types of loads that contactors can control: and inductive load which has a higher ampere draw on startup than while running; and a resistive load which has a constant ampere draw such as a resistance heater. Contacts are made of silver and cadmium (is a chemical element with the symbol Cd and atomic number 48. The soft, bluish-white metal is chemically similar to the two other metals in group 12, zinc and mercury), which resists sticking. The contacts are…

The most basic of single-phase transformers has two coils or windings on it, one called the primary winding and one called the secondary winding, both of which are made out of conductive material. These windings are attached to the limbs of the transformer core as shown in the pic of an ideal transformer. The core itself is made out of magnetic material.…

When the load is disconnected, the meter will still indicate that power is being consumed in the circuit. This can be overcome by two compensating springs, mounted with the primary fixed-coil current coil. These stationary coils are used to produce a magnetic flux proportional to the current through the movable coil. The currents through the primary movable coil and the compensating coil flow in opposite directions. These opposing fields cancel and when the load removed from the circuit, the meter will indicate zero power.…

    - Is a non-destructive testing (NDT) process for detecting surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferroelectric materials such as iron, nickel, cobalt, and some of their alloys. The process puts a magnetic field into the part. The piece can be magnetized by direct or indirect magnetization. Direct magnetization occurs when the electric current is passed through the test object and a magnetic field is formed in the material. Indirect magnetization occurs when no electric current is passed through the test object, but a magnetic field is applied from an outside source. The magnetic lines of force are perpendicular to the direction of the electric current which may be either alternating current (AC) or some form of direct current (DC) (rectified AC).…
