Overview: This document is designed to give you a “bird’s eye view” of this course, my expectations, and the resources you’ll be using throughout this year. Once you have finished reviewing this information, make sure to have your parent or guardian fill out and sign the last page of this document before submitting it to me.

Availability: I am available to answer questions regarding course information, as well as any other questions or concerns you may have throughout the school year. An excellent way to contact me is through email – I will check my email daily, though any emails sent to me after 5 pm may not be seen until the next day. Additionally, I will be available in Room 120 after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays or by appointment.

Course Description: Welcome to your first course in your study of history in the International Baccalaureate program, History of the Americas. Be warned: This is a college-level course! The readings in this class are college-level readings. You will be reading many primary sources and other historians’ interpretations. The reading and writing load for this course is demanding. However, always remember that the goal of this course is to give you the best possible preparation for your college career – you may even earn college-level credit

The purpose of this course is to prepare you for the IB exam and for college. Since your exam will be taken at the end of your senior year, it is critical that you save your assignments and notes in an organized format. You will need them to study for the exam. We will be creating study guides, note cards, and mind maps for your use for each unit – having these next year will make your exam preparation much easier.

    The material in this book comes from my teaching Latin American history over many years. It does not pretend to be a textbook, although it could form the basis of one. It is more than an outline but much is omitted. This little book contains notes and commentary on important topics. It reflects my interpretation of Latin America in the colonial period. My focus is political and economic; I am more comfortable with such topics. Such topics as art, drama, and music are not mentioned. My expertise does not extend to these very worthwhile subjects. Some chapters are more complete than others because I taught more about them. In a number of instances, I have used lists to make it easier to spot important points. Readers should find that the book covers the essentials but that they might want to read articles and other books to find out more. Colonial Latin America, which lasted for about 300 years for most of the region, was extraordinarily complex and rich in texture.     A story that generally remains the same, is that of Columbus’ discovery of the Americas. It is engrained into the minds of American children at a very age that ‘in fourteen-hundred-and-ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue.’ We even gave him a national holiday to celebrate his accomplishment. However, it was not until I took English 3360: Survey of American Literature, Beginnings to 1865, that I was exposed to first-hand accounts of his arrival to the continent. One focus of the course was that of the discovery, conquest, settlement, and the literature of New Spain. It was in this section that we read Columbus’ letter to Luis de Santangel, in which he nonchalantly explains how he has found many islands that he has easily taken possession of because the inhabitants offer no resistance. He gloats how the natives have no way to defend themselves and how they still offer gifts to he and his men despite that he has enslaved some of them. (Columbus, 1493) Letters like Columbus’ and Cortes’ back to the Spanish crown shed a whole new light on the man and event that many of school children have put on plays about. It also extends some understanding to the experiences of the Native Americans and Pilgrims approximately 185 years…
