Strategy approaches
+ Rational approach: Conception and execution of strategy are discrete, sequential activities.
+ Processual approach: Strategy is formed incrementally as a ‘pattern in a stream of decisions’.
+ Evolutionary approach: Market forces determine the survival or failure of organisations.
+ Systemic approach: Strategy is embedded in the cultural
values, norms and rules of the organisation and society in which it operates.
+ Other: Fuzzy.

Strategic thinking, planning, fit and stretch
+ The concepts and practices of strategy are dynamic and subject to continual change.
+ Strategic planning—provides the framework and criteria for making operational decisions, implementing these decisions and monitoring and evaluating the implementation.
+ Strategic thinking versus strategic planning—strategic thinking suggests that creativity rather than formal planning is needed to formulate effective strategy.
+ Strategic planning = strategic fit; Strategic thinking = strategic stretch. + However, application of both concepts together is critical to organisational performance.
