“As We have ordered provision to be made that from henceforward the Indians in no way be made slaves, including those who until now have been enslaved against all reason and right…” This was a statement made in the New Laws of the Indies, set by King Charles the First of Spain. During the time of exploration in Europe, in the New World, Spanish colonies were forcing the Native Americans to work on their farms. This was known as the Encomienda system. The Natives were treated horribly, and after hearing about the conditions, King Charles made a set of laws, known as the New Laws of 1542, that made it illegal to force the Natives to work. Many settlers did not agree with this. However, just because they do not agree, does not mean they should not accept. The epidemics killing off the Natives because of being exposed to new European diseases, the poor mistreatment of the Natives, and the fact that the Natives were living on that land before the Spanish, or any Europeans, came and explored the New World, are just a few of the reasons that the settlers should accept the new laws.
