Forever and a Day

The air was still damp after the hard showers that the sky had just released hours earlier. I could hear the guests starting to arrive, talking amongst themselves as they waited patiently for the ceremony to begin. I anxiously stand with my feet caressing the wet grass. The nervousness hadn’t set in quite yet and the short blissful nap that I had taken just two hours earlier had me rested and fully aware of what was going on around me. How did I get myself in this situation again? Thoughts poured in like the rain had, beating down ever so hard, hitting every nerve in my body. I thought I wasn’t going to do this again because of how painful the last one had been. I look at my watch and notice that it’s almost time to begin, ten minutes. The butterflies begin to dance about in the pit of my stomach, my hands damp like the ground I’m standing on. With my thoughts soaring and my attention elsewhere, I am jolted back to reality with the sound of a familiar voice saying “are you ready?” I shift my gaze to that familiar voice and smile, “yes” I say.
Standing once again in the front of a group of friends and family, my hands begin to shake and my vision begins to tunnel. Taking two deep breaths of the musty, damp air, I take the hands of the man that I plan to spend the rest of my life with. He looks at me with nervous eyes and manages to curl the ends of his mouth upwards in a half smile. With a slight giggle escaping my mouth, I return the gesture. The butterflies have calmed considerably, dancing in intervals. It has begun. The guests, which were once like bees buzzing with excitement, are now calm and collected as if a beekeeper had rested them. “Welcome!” booms an unfamiliar voice, “we are gathered here today…” My thoughts get fuzzy and distorted, I keep my gaze upon the familiar face, smiling. I follow along with the instructions that are given to me, “with this ring…” I... [continues]
