1. Carefully read the information given in the following selection about the DNA structure.
2. After reading the selection, label the different parts of the DNA diagram or illustration.
3. Answer the questions that follow.
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) is made of six smaller molecules- five carbon sugar called deoxyribose, a phosphate molecule and four different nitrogenous bases (adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine). Using research from many sources, including chemically accurate models, Watson and Cricks discovered how these sub units were arranged to make the structure of DNA. The model is called the double helix because two long strands twist around each other like a twisted ladder. The rails of the ladder made of two bases joined together with either two or three weak hydrogen bonds. The basic building block of DNA is called nucleotide. A nucleotide is made up of one sugar molecule, one phosphate molecule and one of the four bases. These four bases are adenine and guanine are (called purine bases) thymine and cytosine (called pyrimidine).Adenine, guanine, thymine, and cytosine are represented by letters A, G, T, and C. The purine bases have a double ring structure while the pyrimidine bases have only one single ring. This was important to Watson and Crick because it helped them figure out how double helix was formed.... [continues]
