If Swifts ‘Modest Proposal’ is satire, as everyone seems to think, then I am even more repulsed in the writing than I was before. Everyone at the webinar the other day thought the little baby was such a cute, darling, little thing, and I agree, life is beautiful. To find humor in, or joke about, killing and eating babies is quite disgusting actually. Finding humour in something so disturbing, grotesque and violent, is quite assaulting to human dignity. The fact, that the author distanced himself from the piece by writing anonymously points to the fact he knew of its graphic assault, whether satire or not.…

My Colloquium class was very interesting this past semester because I can say that I was with one of the best teachers from Boricua College. This year I had more time with the opportunity to learn and practice about my career Early Childhood, which was excellent. Also, during the Colloquium class, we met every Tuesday where we discussed about our practice in the classroom, where we could observe the students and teachers. In fact, the facilitator Linda Perez always made sure that I understand the lesson, we always read about the topic and then discussed about it. Overall, these logs were very beneficial because they provided me more opportunity to improve in the English language as I am from the Dominican Republic and Spanish is my main language. In colloquium, we spoke about any topic and then to expressed ourselves in writing, which was good because you develop the skills of writing.…

Jonathan Swift establishes credibility through rewording few of his acquaintances: “…a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London… a grave author, an eminent French physician… a very worthy person, a true lover of his country, and whose virtues I highly esteem… the famous Psalmanazar, a native of the island Formosa.” However, because the information he gathers are from people that others would not know of, his credibility is questionable. Nevertheless, he also gives very detailed and specific facts that help support his argument. Basically, Swift appeals to his audience through rhetorical literary techniques—logos, ethos, and pathos. The entire proposal is a measurement of Swift’s ethos and logos. The way he presents…

I've read many articles in my day, and I am known to be a very sarcastic person at times but this piece “A Modest Proposal” is next level insane, now I may be wrong, but what I've gathered from this piece is basically cannibalism of young children. “A young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled.” Now i haven't really heard about Dr. Jonathan Swift, nor do I really know about his background, but his use of satire in this article is preposterous. I only hope this is a use of satire and that Dr. Swift hasn't actually considered doing this. Because the thought of this alone, in my eyes, is absurd. This proposal has a very diverse use of satiric devices…

In "A Modest Proposal", Swift uses several different words to create satire, one of which is the word 'breeders '. He uses the term breeders in reference to the women. In several paragraphs he talks about these breeders and their role. "I calculate there may be about 200,000 couples whose wives are breeders;"(Swift 2) The way that he refers to the women as breeders instead of mothers, wives or women creates satire. Instead of talking about them he talks about what they do. Or what they are supposed to do. This makes good artillery because referring to the women as breeders gives them a significant role and satire is created because instead of being known as women and…

(Swift, 1729) He goes so far as to suggest different ways of preparing the children as meals. (Swift, 1729) He claims that this is the only answer for all the children born into poverty. (Swift, 1729) He claims that under their present day conditions, it is impossible to solve the problem by any other means. (Swift, 1729) The poor cannot be employed in handicraft or agriculture, or build houses and cultivate land. (Swift, 1729) Children can’t make a living as thieves until around six years of age so that isn’t an option. Nope, all that can be done with them is to eat them. (Swift,…

Collaboration papers could be considered by many as one of the easiest papers to do, but also considered but others as difficult to accomplish. Both of them have their advantages and disadvantages, but it is up to the person to decide which method is more useful to complete the assignment. It is seen by most people that a collaborated paper is an easy assignment because the amount of personnel involved on the paper, the amount of time that requires to perform the research of the material that wants to be included in the paper, if several people are after the same topic. Different resources are used to supply the material to the team such are books, newspaper articles,…

According to the article "Is There Anything Wrong With This Picture" by Lauren Tashis and Kristian Lewis is seems to be that because of phones and other technology, people are more rude than they were in the past. After reading over this article and looking at all the evidence I determined that having good manners benefits everyone. First of all, people with good manner tend to be more successful. For instance, in this article the author states that "Studies show that teens with good manners are more likely to be successful: they get better grades, and are more impressive in job interviews. This shows that having good manners can help you get good grades and even secure you a job. Another great piece of evidence to support my claim is that…

According to an article written by Ben Brumfield and Chris Boyette from CNN, “Text a driver in New Jersey and you could see your day in court.” Texting someone while they are driving a vehicle could result in a lawsuit against the person texting for damages up to $150,000. How can texting someone while they may be driving be held against you? What if the message was delayed somehow and didn’t get to them until after they were driving? How would you know if they were driving before you sent the text? Wouldn’t it be the driver’s responsibility to make the choice to look at their phone?…

There are a lot of possibilities about the authors purose in this book. Many things happen in this book, and at the same time it felt as if I could be reading chapters of a friends life when they were younger. The author, ______ writes in a way so that you feel the emotion of the three characters he focus's on throughout the book. As a malleable person, I could feel Noboru, Fusako, and Ryuji's struggles and happy times. When Noboru talked about the emptiness of his own world, I could relate to his feelings, (being a young girl myself not too long ago) and would wonder why the heck the world is the way it is. So cruel, unworthy and dreadful.Nobody seems to think the way he does besides the members of his gang. When Fusako talks to Noboru about getting married again to Ryuiji on PG 145, she starts crying because of all the suffering she's had to deal with. The death of her lover, taking care of her only son. Being constantly lonely. The author really makes his characters have a lot of depth to them! You can connect to them so you feel what they feel. I like that about this book because you feel more involved, more attached to the characters. You can feel the struggles between Ryuiji and his decision about what hiis true love would have to be. Fusako or the sea. He's been a sailor for many years now, but he has fallen in love with "another" woman and he feels confused about what he wants. After he comes back from his journey, he deides to stick with the land and abandon the sea. (He chooses Fusako.) There is one more thing I would like to talk aout. The last chapter in winter, Chapter 7. Noboru and his friends wanted to hear Ryuiji's sea stories at the hill above the pool when school got out at two. This was the first time Noboru asked his to do anything, so he had to do it to prove that he would be a good father. The only thing was that it had to be a secret from Mom. Ryuiji didnt see how…

A “hook up” culture has become the way it is amongst most college campuses. It has become rare to see couples walking through campus or out on dates at night. The idea that we’re young and have no need to be serious about relationships has overcome the ideas of the past that at this point in our lives we should be looking to find our significant others. The music and television programs that are popular today do not promote monogamy in the least. The only thing being promoted these days by celebrities and songwriters that are looked up upon is promiscuity, and sex, lots of sex. These forces have great influence on teens and show them that it’s okay to sleep around or make-out with random people at parties. Moreover, it isn’t such a commonality in today’s world to wait until you’re married to have sex.…

The panel discussion is a very helpful activity that gave me a lot of feedback and ideas about what to do with my paper and how to make it clearer. Starting out, I explained exactly what I was writing about and why. After I did that, I showed them examples of my research and the different views I have been looking at. My facilitator, Mrs. Davis, told me a lot of useful ways to work what I wanted to do and say into my paper without it coming off as bias and unclear.…
