The setting is Welton Academy in New England, 1959. All boys’ dormitory or preparatory (prep) school. The boys are approximately 17 years old.

Mr. Keating was very different, unconventional, interesting to listen to as a teacher and very inspiring. For instance, he asks his students to rip the introduction out of a poetry book, telling the students that they must learn to think for themselves. He shows them pictures of former Welton Students (now deceased); He makes the students realize that they are “food for worms”

The boys become more alert to what going on around them. They don’t want to miss any opportunity that comes their way!!
