1. Describe the setting (time and place) in detail.

The setting is Welton Academy in New England, 1959. All boys’ dormitory or preparatory (prep) school. The boys are approximately 17 years old.

2. Discuss the meaning of how John Keating introduces himself to the class.

Mr. Keating was very different, unconventional, interesting to listen to as a teacher and very inspiring. For instance, he asks his students to rip the introduction out of a poetry book, telling the students that they must learn to think for themselves.
He shows them pictures of former Welton Students (now deceased); He makes the students realize that they are “food for worms”

3. a) What Latin phrase captures part of the theme of this movie?

Carpe Diem- Seize the day

b) How does this phrase change each of the characters?
The boys become more alert to what going on around them. They don’t want to miss any opportunity that comes their way!! Their attitude changes because they start to reflect on what they want to do with their future. They also start to question their parents’ decisions which start to cause friction in the school.

The boy’s from the Dead Poets Society were used to being told what to do in order to please their parents and most figures of authority. They would conform to most rules to avoid also getting the strap or other violent forms of discipline.

    As with any form of dialogue, whether it is a story or even just conversation, using specific words helps convey a meaning and helps the listeners understand. “Boys enter the house, boys enter the house” (Moody) is by far the most said thing in the whole story, but for good reason. As the boys come in and out of the house, this is a representation of them aging. With each entrance they have grown either physically or they have become more mature. Their maturation through entering the house is displayed towards the end of the story when he says the “Boys hold open the threshold, [the] awesome threshold” (Moody). This threshold is a metaphor for something like some sort of gateway. Each time this gateway is traversed there is a new level of boy that is coming through it. Showing them aging in this manner allows readers to look back at their memories of growing up and make connections to themselves. Also, Moody’s choice of using the word ‘boys’ over and over has quite an interesting effect on the audience. The boys are never given names, which leaves you feeling like they are somewhat generic and you have to use your imagination to fill in the specific details about what they look like and any other specific details about them.     The movie was quite not new to me since I’ve watched it several times when I was still in high school during our overnight. But I must admit that the impact of this movie to me has never changed from the moment that I personally have watched it. It was a very realistic movie that touched my heart all over again. Indeed, when we are young we really are curious about things and would actually see for ourselves on something. Mr. Keating, the teacher encourages his students to take chances and think outside the box. He is an ideal teacher to me because his purpose of being a teacher is not just to teach them the concepts but to teach them something that could be use for their future. He inspires his students to explore new things for it is indeed in doing so that you get to explore yourself and know your capacities & limitations. Mr. Keating reminds me a lot of my math teacher way back in high school. He is also a very comic but a strict man. Since, I am really poor in math I really refused studying the subject. But when I met this teacher, my outlook towards the subject has changed. He made me realize that if you want to achieve something, you have to do everything that you can so that at the end even if you succeed or fail, you can proudly say that you did your best despite of and you’ll have no regrets. Also, he made me realize that grades are really not what matters most but what you have learned. We have to do our best in every thing that we do all for God’s greater glory. The movie is very suitable for us, teenagers since we are in the stage in finding out who we really are, what we really want and who we want to be. The movie encourages us to be the students who aren’t afraid of taking risks but at the same time with every action that we do we are responsible for it.
