In this course, students are introduced to the conduct of fraud examinations, including a discussion of specific procedures used in forensic accounting examinations and the reasoning behind these procedures. Topics include an overview of fraud and abuse, forensic evidence, substantive procedures for cash outflow irregularities, substantive procedures for asset irregularities, financial statement fraud, and examination reporting. Objectives Overview of Fraud and Abuse     Readings Identify the impact of occupational fraud and abuse on the organization. Describe U.S. governmental oversight of accounting fraud and abuse. Define categories of corruption. Assess the types of accounting evidence.

Readings     Read the section Fraud Examination Methodology (Ch. 1) of Principles of Fraud Examination. Read Ch. 10 & 14 of Principles of Fraud Examination. Read Ch. 4 of The Financial Numbers Game: Detecting Creative Accounting Practices. Read Ch. 13 of Fraud Auditing and Forensic Accounting.

Details
Participation Participate in class discussion 4 out of 7 days during the week with at least 2 responses each day. Please feel free to look over the articles posted each week in the Materials forum. They are excellent. Respond to weekly discussion questions. DQ-1: How can undetected fraud or accounting abuse affect a company? DQ-2: Explain any ethical implications in detecting fraud and abuse. Individual Assignment: Internal Accountant’s Report to Management You are the internal accountant at a company that is preparing for an upcoming government contract bid. Management is deciding if it is necessary to perform a full financial status review prior to the bid. As an internal accountant, prepare a report for management with the following: o Section I: The impact of occupational fraud and abuse on the company o Section II: U.S. governmental oversight of accounting fraud and abuse and its affect on the company o Section III: Potential corruption schemes (4) to be aware of within the company   Format your paper according to APA standards of no more than 1050 words. Please organize your paper according to the week 1 grading rubric specifications. TOTAL POINTS FOR THE WEEK
