Prerequisite: Registration as graduate student or Instructor’s permission.

Course Description:This course develops the skills and perspectives of using project management techniques to plan, organize, and control projects. The contents constitute planning, organizing, and controlling projects. The course includes major topics of Strategy, Priorities, Organization, Project Tools, and Leadership. Primary class emphasis is on the project management process and tools.

Required Book: Erik W. Larson, and Clifford F. Gray, Project Management: The Managerial Process, 5e, McGraw-Hill Irwin, 2008, ISBN-978-0-07-742692-7. Note that this text comes with CDROMs; ensure that both CD’s are with the book.

Software: Microsoft Project® (Requires a reference on MS Project), see Project Management Software section on page 3 below.

Learning Objective: To be able to plan, organize, and control engineering and business projects using concepts, methods, and quantitative tools from the field of project management. After successfully completing this course a student will be able to: • Use the concepts, techniques, and project management tools available to project managers, • Create work breakdown structures and networks for planning, scheduling, and controlling projects, • Develop an awareness of potential conflicts and problems that can occur on projects, • Identify appropriate behavior for successfully managing a project, • Generate a framework for a complete computer-based information system for managing projects.

Attainment of objectives is assessed by exams, homework assignments covering concepts and computer-based analysis, case studies, and projects applying techniques to real-world situations.

Exams and Grading: (Exams: 60%) There is a midterm exam and final exam. The midterm determines 30% of your course score and the final determines 30%. (Project: 30%) The term project determines 30% of your course score. Preliminary work (proposing a topic and getting feedback on preliminary analysis) may be included in homework assignments. You will work on the term project in small groups as assigned by the instructor.

(Homework: 10%) There are several graded homework assignments. The lowest score will be dropped. The remaining highest scores help determine your course score. There are no extra-credit assignments. You may work on the homework assignments individually or in a small group of two or three students (recommended).

Graded Homework: Homework assignments are placed on Moodle each week; they will be made available when the lecture is available. They will remain open for the semester. Late assignments are not accepted, so please do not ask for permission to turn in an assignment late; under no circumstances will you hand in a late assignment. If the assignment is not received by the close out date and time it will not be accepted and will be returned to the sender unopened. The homework you hand in should be an indication of your effort, understanding, and accomplishment of the assignment.
