The following disorders are disorders first seen in childhood:
Attention deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Autism and Asperger’s Disorder
Mental Retardation
CHILDHOOD DISORDER: ADHd (attention deficit hyperactivity disoder)
 ADHD: symptoms and criteria
ADHD is a developmental disorder and usually starts during infancy
Central features: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity
Tend to be forgetful. Frequently misplace items
Tend to make careless errors
Associated with/leads to behavioral, cognitive, social, and academic problems
ADHD is the most frequently over diagnosed and under-diagnosed disorder because they are being diagnosed strictly as “ADD” or the patients are just not coming in
“I just always thought my child would get better” – didn’t want to take them in
DSM-IV and DSM-IV-TR Symptom Clusters (i.e. Symptoms of ADHD)
Cluster 1: symptoms of inattention need
Includes everything except hyperactivity
Difficulty paying attention, organizing problems, being forgetful, frequently misplacing items, excessive day dreaming, easily distracted, appearing to not listen to what is said
Cluster 2: Symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity cluster
Meaning “too much activity” - think of the energizer bunny
Symptoms include frequently interrupting others, frequently sitting still/quietly, more likely to throw temper tantrums, being restless and fidgety
They don’t think before they act (grab things, invade personal space)
Either cluster 1 or 2 must be present for a diagnosis

    According to Lydia Furman’s article, “What Is Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADHD)?” the author describes the disorder as “the most common neurobehavioral condition of childhood.” Furman expresses the misconceptions people typically have about ADHD being a disease rather than a “group of symptoms representing a final common behavioral pathway for a gamut of emotional, psychological, and/or learning problems” (Furman, 2005, p. 994).
