Clinical Chemistry
CLINICAL CHEMISTRY – defined as the study of biochemical processes associated with health & dse & the measurement of constituents in body fluids or tissues to facilitate dx of dse - dual nature since it’s both a basic and applied science thus clin chem. technologists & technicians should have an understanding of the physiologic & biochemical processes occurring in the body, as well as technical skills to perform the various tests - chemistry in connection with the management of patients, as in a hospital laboratory - application of chemical tests to health care, as in analysis of body fluid components.

CELLS – basic unit of the body, where most of the body’s chemical reactions occur

@ Composition: ➢ nucleus ➢ mitochondria ➢ ribosomes ➢ endoplasmic reticulum ➢ secretory granules ➢ cellular (plasma) membrane

@ the formation, growth, & functioning of cells require the presence of appropriate raw materials & enzymes & a readily available energy supply (

@ Malfunction: 1. destruction by trauma or by invasive agents 2. genetic deficiency of a vital enzyme 3. insufficient supply of one or more essential nutrients 4. insufficient blood supply 5. insufficient oxygen supply 6. malignancy 7. accumulation of waste products 8. failure of a control system 9. a defect in the cellular recognition of certain signals

ROLE OF THE CLINICAL CHEMISTRY LABORATORY: = most clin chem tests entail measuring the concentration of a particular constituent (the analyte) in body fluids, primarily blood plasma or serum = increased concentration could be caused by the ff: a.

On a simple level, this chemistry provides the nutritional information found on most packaged food. The recent fluctuation of new drugs to improve sporting capabilities has prompted the organisations conducting blood tests to improve their methods, namely through analytical chemistry. It is surprising how many areas of life analytical chemists are a part of. In infrastructure, there is an emphasis on building bigger and better, while still maintaining safety. Organic chemistry is the study of structure, properties and the reactions dealing with carbon compounds (organic chemistry, n.d.). This type of chemistry may deal with small items, but knowing how organic chemistry works as a whole has an impact on our daily lives and also the occupations some of us consider. Knowing the bases of organic chemistry can be important and sometimes even required to learn for the bases of many health care professions. Learning organic chemistry can have an effect on how common healthcare occupations do their individual jobs, such as breaking down the basic parts of a compound, such as in a medicine, seeing how the properties interact and the reactions they can have. By knowing this you then can applying this to an individual health, like a pharmacist does on a daily basis. Organic chemistry may be a small part in healthcare but it does pay an important part. It can be significant that people venturing into a healthcare profession take organic chemistry course to provide an understanding of the compounds that have impact within the people they are treating. There are many professions within healthcare that organic chemistry can have an impact on, such as chiropractors, nutritionists and pharmacists.…
