3.1.1 Describe how to establish respectful, professional relationships with children | | What strategies could you use to build respectful relationships? | 1. A child tells you all about their pets. | If a child wants to talk to me about their pets (or other things that affects them outside of school) I encourage them to do so whenever possible as I feel they are beginning to trust me and this might make it easier for them to come to me with more serious problems they might have. I show interest by asking them questions and listening carefully, I would also share my experience with pets. | 2. A child has tried really hard and produced an excellent piece of work. | When a child tries particularly hard I praise them on their work, I take time to highlight all the positive parts, ask them what they like about their piece and what they enjoyed about the activity and show an interest in how they felt it went and reward them with a sticker, this child is also asked to show their work to the rest of the class. | 3. A child says they don’t know how to start their work. | To help a child that is finding it difficult to start a task sit down with them and discuss what it is they are finding hard, explain what is expected from them in the task and encourage them to talk it through first then go over different or certain ways to begin and if they still cannot do it give them some minor pointers (ensure that I am not doing the work for them though) once they have an idea encourage them to write it down. | 4. One child isn’t concentrating and distracting the whole group. | If a child is being disruptive then be firm and tell him/her the rules and what is expected of them, if this continues give them a warning and explain what this is for, in my school they get 3 warning s before they are sent to the head teacher. It is very important to be consistent. | 5. A child is crying and says “my work is full of mistakes”. | Sit
