CHEM 105 Chemistry in the Human Environment
CRN 80464 Fall 2013 General Description CHEM 105 Chemistry in the Human Environment is a onesemester non-mathematical course for liberal arts and non-science majors, which fulfills G.E. requirements in physical sciences. The course stresses a humanistic approach to chemistry, introducing concepts via important social and environmental contexts. Students need not have any previous exposure to chemistry.

Access Requirements No campus visits are required. However, the comprehensive
Final Exam for the course must be taken either on campus or in an officially proctored location approved by the instructor. The course will be administered using a class web site in Moodle that is accessed via the MyCOM student portal. Students are expected to access this web site a minimum of 2 to 3 times per week in order to remain current in the course. Failure to access the course website on a weekly basis and/or failure to complete the weekly course assignments will constitute a lack of active participation in the course, which may result in being dropped from the course without notice. In addition to a standard textbook, students will utilize modern multimedia tools including digital video mini-lectures, demonstrations, animations, and interactive tutorials, in order to enhance learning in a distance environment. Assignments will be posted on the class website and students are required to complete work by posted deadlines by uploading documents, by participating in electronic discussion forums with the instructor and with classmates, and by completing online quizzes and exams.

CHEM 105 is a demanding class Students should be prepared to dedicate a minimum of 6 to 9 hours per week to the class in order to be successful. Please note that online learning requires much more independence than traditional classroom learning.     In everyday life, several reactions are encountered, but still knowledge on how fast these occur and the factors affecting it were still insufficient. This study aimed to determine the different factors affecting the rate of reaction and how these factors affected it. An experiment named iodine clock reaction was done to answer the questions raised. In this study the reaction of iodide ion and peroxodisulfate (VI) ion was analyzed with the help of thiocyanate ion. The experiment was divided into three parts. First, second, and third parts of the experiment were used to examine the effects of the reactant concentrations, temperature and the presence of catalyst to the rate of reaction, respectively. The time before the reaction proceeded was recorded and calculations were done to obtain necessary information. It was identified that increasing the reactant concentration would increase the rate of reaction. Likewise, higher temperature increased the rate. Finally, the presence of catalyst had enormous effect on the reaction rate. It increased as the catalyst was added. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that said factors could increase the rate of reaction by increasing the temperature or reactant concentration or by adding a catalyst on the mixture.…
