The settler societies of New England, the middle colonies, the Chesapeake, and the South had similarities as well as many differences, some being religious beliefs, labor, and their societies economic standpoint. In the article, “Advice to a Young Tradesman” by Benjamin Franklin, it’s stated, “…the way to wealth, if you desire it, is as plain as the way to market. It depends chiefly on two words, industry and frugality; that is, waste neither time nor money, but make the best use of both.” Even though these societies faced different economic and social structures, the overall common goal of each society was to be successful and make profits.…

The colonists left England and settled in the different areas of the East coast which eventually led to cultural differences in social interactions, education, and the settlement of different religious groups. The social interactions in the northern colonies differed greatly from those of the southern colonies. The northern colonies’ families, like in New England, centered around patriarchy and male predominance. The southern colonies had an unbalanced ratio of males to females with a male majority. This resulted in greater independence for females. Women had more power and played a more dominant role southern culture. They owned plantations and were usually head of the household. Meanwhile, in the north, Puritans, believed in males having absolute authority over the family, especially over wives and daughters. Since less women were available in south than in the north, the…

Throughout the course of human history, it is certain that motivated groups of people have gone to bold extremes behind personal zeal and wishful impulses. The New World prior to 1700 was a very favorable refuge for people with this nature, as it was a vast and ungoverned landmass that, with the exception of defensive aboriginals, lacked formidable security against exploitation. In 1607, a modest group of English descendants arrived upon the shore of Jamestown, Virginia, bearing with them a persistent drive toward gold, prosperity, and a prospective foundation for new society. In 1620, a pious group of English separatists…

Hello, and welcome to “Learn More, Teach More.” It has been more than five centuries since Christopher Columbus reached the Americas. We know a great deal about Columbus, of course, and about the Europeans and Africans who crossed the Atlantic after him. We know much less about the “Indians,” as Columbus mistakenly called them—the people already living in America. But we are learning more all the time, so I want to talk about early contacts between Native Americans and newcomers.…

In simple terms, cultural diversity can be defined as the level of diversity or difference in a given society. Societies that display high levels of diversity exhibit many differences across that population. Differences can include skin color, religious affiliation, cultural practices and other ethnic beliefs and customs. Immigration is a major factor in determining the level of diversity that a given society is exposed to. Ever since the dawn of time, humans have traveled the globe in curiosity to interact with other civilizations. These interactions were either well intentioned to share and form partnerships, or militaristic conquests to expand territories and force populations to conform to foreign ideals. These such interactions helped to foster cultural diversity both genetically, as is the case with Attila the Hun, or substantively through the spread of cultural beliefs and practices worldwide.…

I grew up in the deep south were racism was still alive and thriving. My time was in the sixties when the Klux Klux Klan was causing trouble and nothing was being done about it. When I attended school schools were segregated, but all the students in my class were people of color. White students had their class and we had ours all at the same school.…
